i dont know much about plates, i didnt know its a big deal with insurance etc |
Most insurers don't charge to change the reg number over, or at least not the ones I have always dealt with. Plates are £10 a pair off eBay, the guy makes 1000s and they are road legal, he'll modify them too if you send him what you want.... |
Unless you send him the documentation required ie proof of address, proof of entitlement to that plate, they won't be road legal. Any numberplate manufacturer has to complete the relevant documentation, which is audited. Would you send your driving licence and V5 to a complete stranger on ebay?
If the plate is modified in any way, it won't be road legal.
I was in a shop the other day and a driver came in asking for a plate to replace the one he had just lost for his HGV trailer. They refused to make one as he couldn't prove that he was entitled to display the plate on that vehicle, despite it being parked right outside the shop. He ended up buying the adhesive letters and backing plate and making the plate himself so he didn't get pulled for having no plate until he could get back to his depot and get a legal one.
The rules on plate manufacture are an ass at times, but they are there for a reason. |
Although completely correct, if you have a plate with the correct font, size, spacing and stamping there is no actual difference to the end result.
Once it's in your hands it is kind of irrelevant how you obtained it, as long as it conforms to the legal standards once fitted to the vehicle.
The Ebay ones don't require you to send any documentation.
It's an odd one to be honest.
- Just realised this was a necro bump.. ah well will leave it posted anyhow

I remember A206 PUG used to be on a black 180 with lambo doors a few years ago.
Probably not worth that much now, even the most expensive 206s are a max of 4k so it's unlikely anyone would spend loads.
