Hi,

I recently purchased a Peugeot 206 1.4 Automatic 5 door on 51 plate. I bought it because it was £600 and the fault that it had seemed like a Throttle Position Sensor issue at first. I thought I would take the plunge and see if I could sort out the problem.

This is where the nightmare began.

The problem that was being exhibited was Limp Home Mode. The transmission would not allow you to change down into 3, 2 or 1. It only allowed Drive, Reverse and Neutral.

I changed the Throttle Position Sensor and the car had the same fault. I checked to make sure the wiring was sound of which it appeared to check out. I then swapped out the Gearbox ECU with a direct replacement and again it was experiencing the same fault.

The diagnostics being reported was that the throttle position was at a constant 88%, even in idle.

I then suspected that the ECU might be suspect. I had the exact same ECU lying around which had its immobiliser disabled, so as a quick test I plugged it in. The car fired up and was still stuck in limp mode. The strange thing is, I could not seem to clear the faults in either the original or replacement ECU.

I noticed that the ECU that was installed in the car was a Bosch M744 ECU. I checked my local Peugeot dealer and they stated that the ECU that was supposed to be in the car was a Sagem S2000 unit. This explained why I could not clear the faults in the ECU!

This probably also explained why the car was stuck in LHM if it could not communicate to the gearbox ECU, etc.

I have an S2000-25 ECU, BSI, gearbox and keyset which I could fit in the car. I believe this would be sufficient, but I have the following questions:

==> Is the Peugeot ECU for that make and model supposed to be a Sagem S2000 model, and if so, what is the exact model codes that should be used?

Like I said, I have an S2000-25 (note the number 25) ECU and accompanying bits and pieces. I just want to be sure it is a good fit for the car.

I also have an unlocked S2000-25 ECU being sent to me on Tuesday, which I can do a simple test to make sure that the ECU is the cause of the LHM problem, and if so, I will then go ahead and replace the BSI, ECU, keyset, etc with the Sagem S2000 version so that the car is back to a good condition.

I can't believe I didn't check the ECU in the car I bought, but to be honest, I would have never expected someone to replace the ECU willy nilly!

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I had the same thing actually.

Realised a while back that my 1.4i, 2001, manual was fitted with a 106/Partner Van ECU.
There was a clear-cut warning in PP2000 everytime the car was hooked-up to scan etc.
Are you getting this warning?
Is it telling you: 'fit correct ECU or continue with diagnosis Y/N?"

A different or 'wrong' unit can sometimes work but with pin-out being different, so some sensors are
not 'seen' by the ECU, and in my case the map was for a van and not a 206.

The fact that it's Bosch in there at the moment is not 100% certain that incorrect ECU was fitted.
It might well be, but you have to check by spending a while on-line (ebay, ECU reman sites etc)
to try and find-out which ECU is fitted for your model (automatic, Year, engine size etc).

Then, you have two options:
1) Buy an unlocked ECU of the correct type and hope all the parameters are already set good for your vehicle.
But this will still give an error message in PP2000 because it will have some of the wrong info still stored in the BSI.
It might work or seem to work fine after that move.

2) Buy a used ECU/BSI/Keyfob kit from eBay or simillar, fit the whole lot and finish with it. (Recomended)

Mind every move you do with this issue because you can end-up going round in circles getting wrong stuff etc.
But access to Peugeot Planet 2000 would be good to help you sort it properly.

I am now in the process of finding-out which authorised dealer garage did this on 2/4/2003 all under guarantee ofcourse.. No wonder the previous owner sold it sooner rather than later.

VIN number + Peugeor Service Box will give the Peugeot / Citroen part number of the ecu that was fitted at the factory, you can then take the PSA part number & find exactly what type of ecu it is.

Yeah I done some research and it does appear that the correct ECU is a Sagem S2000, not the Bosch M7.4.4 ECU that has been installed (and paired). The Peugeot specialist near me also gave me the PPN, which states that the Injector Calculator Sensor (Peugeot's posh word for an ECU) has part #: (01) 1938 45.

Is anyone able to check the exact Sagem S2000 ECU? The Sagem ECU's appear to have a two digit number after the S2000.

@V9977: the PP2000 tool doesn't warn me about the ECU. I checked online and it seems the ECU that was installed incorrectly is actually for an 106.

I do actually have a Sagem S2000 BSi, keyset, ECU but I have never fitted a BSi before. I am not even sure where it is. I think maybe inside the glovebox housing, or under the driver's side steering column. Will need to check.

Might wait until I get the unlocked S2000 ECU on tuesday before I go ahead and replace the whole lot.

How many plugs does the ECU have that's fitted at the moment?

You have to check thoroughly what you will replace it with because there are many S2000-2x which
are for the auto 206 it seems.

BSI is under the drivers' compartment above the pedals. Very easy to replace, just one screw and a clip holding it in.
It will be Siemens (Sagem is for ECU).

The fact that PP2000 is not giving you a warning in 'global test' or 'engine ECU' scan is unexpected.
Try going on Service Box again and in 'characteristics' on the left there might be a refrence to the brand (at least) of ECU fitted. Or just plug-in the unlocked unit and see if that improves things.

Will do, thanks for the info about the BSi location. I might be tempted to try and fit the BSi and ECU that I have over the weekend.

Isn't there a battery disconnection routine that needs to be done on the 206s?

I am aware of the one that is for when you apply a new key to brand new BSi and ECU, e.g. with the driver Window down, etc.

If yours in multiplexed then yes, window down etc.
If it isn't then I just leave it alone for ten minutes then disconnect.

I would respond but I kind of lost interest in the word "intrest" ;o)

Hehehe, only joking. Looks like the problem was the ECU that was in there. I just replaced the BSi and the ECU and cleared the faults from the log.

The car now runs perfectly.

So the Sagem S2000-25 ECU did the trick.

Now I can sell the car I bought for £600 for at least double that and have a nice return. This is the reason why some Autos are not as bad as some people say, when it comes to them making you some money...
