Hi All,

I took my car for an MOT and it failed on several things. I took the car to another garage to get the items fixed (the original one is a council one and only does the test). They have said they fixed everything.

However when I took it back for the re-test it failed again on the Emissions Test. It failed on the below;

Fast Idle Test - CO Max 0.30%, reading 0.41% = Fail
Second Fast Idle Test - CO Max 0.30%, reading 0.50% = Fail

I will take it back to the garage but wanted to know if anyone has any ideas as to what it could be. The car needs an oil change so could this be having an impact?

The CAT is only 2 years old so I hope it is not that. The MOT guy did say that the engine was running a little hot but the coolant seems fine.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

The car is a Peugeot 206 2000 (W) 1.1

Fill the tank with Shell V-power and take it for a 20-30 minute run along the motorway before the test. It gives the engine a good clean out and is known to reduce the emissions.

Ask the garage how they knew they had fixed everything. Did they check the emissions after doing the repairs? What did they do to fix the problem? Sounds like yo may have paid for things you didn't need.

Thanks macca1411 I will try what you suggest.

There were lots of things to be fixed on the car, unfortunately just after the MOT the engine started cutting out so I had to have the coil and spark plugs replaced. The MOT guy said that perhaps the garage though this was causing the CO2 problems but it clearly is not.

Can the oil have anything to do with this or is it unlikely?

The MOT guy was really goods and he said that he ran the engine as hot as possible (80C) to try and pass it but still no luck.

80 deg C = the thermostat wont even be open, the correct running temp is around 90 deg C.

A good service can keep the emissions down, so an oil and filter change might help. Also change the air filter as if it is clogged and restricting air flow, this can also increase the emissions.

I've used Redex in the past to clean the engine, but always found the Shell V-power to be better. I'm lucky as the MOT place I use is a good 40 min run away so the car gets 25 mins on the motorway and 15 mins on A and B roads. Engines always nice and hot when I get there and I put it straight into the MOT bay for him, so no time for it to cool Wink

Can I just check guys that nobody thinks it the cat because the MOT guy suggested it was that but it is only 2 years old.

I am going to change the oil and filer and air filter (that has not been done for a long time) and will put some good fuel in it before going on a long drive. I don't think there is a shall near me but there is a MERCO/Texaco/Total so do they have something similar?

The cat should be fine so put some decent oil in your oil change.change the filter and air filter and get some redex or similar from the parts place and ask wot redex will best lower emissions.then fillup with your garages premium fuel and add the redex

_. Now before your test set off 30 mins before u need to amd take a speedy trip around then with a hot engine go to test and try to get it straight in so engine doesnt cool down....this should be enuf.

Thanks all of you for the response.

So I took it back to the garage and he tested it for me. Apparently i have a lazy cat and he said when he left it running for a while and got it heated up it was well below the pass level*.

So this is what I am going to do;

1 - See if Kwik-Fit will replace the cat as it is still under warranty, anyone have any idea if they will? (I would not have bought from them normally but it was 7pm on a Friday and no one else was open and I needed to complete a 300 mile trip)

2 - Do as above and change oil, oil filter, air filter, add redex and get some premium petrol in the car. I have got 5w40 fully synthetic oil will this do (other places suggest getting this)?

3 - Speak to the MOT centre and tell them what I know and see if it will pass (after a 30 minute drive).

4 - If none of these work the garage I had the work done at said they had no problem doing a MOT at cost and would guarantee it would pass as their tests showed the emissions were fine.

Sorry by below I mean the % CO2 was below so it was an easy pass.

failed CO alone normally has nothing to do with the cat.

do they test the lambda?

if the signal is fine i suspect there is injector problems. When is the last service done?

all fuel additive is pretty much rubbish and useless. Fix the problem early or it will lead to a bigger bill later
