i have had 2 cars put to cat c by insurance 1 of which was last month. 1 i did not buy back the other i did so this is what happend with both....
1st car (did not buy back)
car was crashed on a46 due to weather conditions, insurers said it was a cat c and offered me £2000 car was worth more and we argued and got £2500.
they took the courtesy car the day after we accepted the £2500 and left us with no car.
also we could have bought our old car back for £600 but didn't
2nd car
car was parked in a car park and someone hit it, front bumper had few marks and that was it! insures said it was a cat c as it was an mg and original parts could not be sourced. they offered us a low amount £300 less then what it would cost to buy the same model in the same condition it was before the accident, again we argued untill we got what the car was worth, we then bought the car back for %17 of the money they paid out to us. all we had to to do was get a vic check (£40) before we re taxed the car. we did no repairs to the car( none needed jusy some t cut) and took it for a vic test which it passed, all they did was check the vins on the car matched.
my advise would be-
make sure you get back what the car is worth to date, have a look on autotrader, pistonheads etc and have a look what a car in the same condition as yours (before the crash obviously) is worth. they can not leave you worse of, they always offer you a low amount they want to pay out little as possible
if you do buy the car back make sure it is worth it! i loved the 1st car that was wrote off but it would never have been the same and not worth fixing tbh after all its just a car. we only bought the 2nd car back because the damage was so minor! not even a dent.
*** EDIT***
we was paid by cheque both times, each time was a different company, took about 4-5 day to get the cheque then 1 0r 2 weeks to clear, we could draw against it though.
when we bought the car back they just took it iff what they was paying us out i.e insted off £1000 they gave us £830
hope this helps.
