All,
Really strange situation with the car this morning. I will try to include as much detail as possible. I think I flooded the engine but not sure?
Car is a 2005 1.4 16v 65k on the clock. In October it had a new battery, full service inc cam and water pump.
Yesterday I de badged the boot and doors. The way I park the car meant I had to start the car, move it three feet forward and turned the car off. When I had finished I started the car again and moved it three feet back and turned the car off.
This morning I went to the car and went to start it. I normally wait for the stop light to go off but this morning I did not. It almost started but did not quite make it. It seems to do this if I try to start it before the stop light goes out.
I then immediately tried to start the car again. The lights were not dimming and the engine was turning but just not catching? I tried a few more times to start the car and could really smell petrol by this time. Also battery was starting to struggle.
I had to get my neighbour to hook his car battery upto mine. It took a few more times. Finally the car started. ran roughly for a few seconds. I gave it a bit of gas and ran fine then.
It is starting and running fine now.
Any ideas?

Bore wash from yesterday, starting the engine twice to move the car 3 feet each time isn't doing you any favours.
Keep doing this & you will ruin the engine in the long term.

I did wonder if this was the issue? It's not something I have ever done before. Can you please explain what you mean by Bore Wash?

Bore wash is when there is excessive fuel in the cylinders which wash the oil away from the cylinder lining causing a lack of lubrication and wear on the engine. This can ruin an engine over time but I don't see why it would cause starting trouble like that

Car seems fine now?? Used it a couple of times today. Starts first time. Very strange

Obviously I am never going to be doing this again!
MrBSI could you please explain a bit more in laymans terms what issue it caused and how that affected the car starting? I have very limited mechanical knowledge. I have googled bore wash, but am not really understanding how or why it affected the car as it did.

When you start the engine from cold the ecu will be on the warm up cycle & this means extra fuel is added to get the engine up to operating temp so the cat is working as quickly as possible.
To much excess fuel if the engine is repeatedly started from cold & not allowed to warm up will wash the oil from the cylinder bores which in turn can lower the compression on the cylinders / lead to wear as the rings scrape the bores.
No or low compression = no start / poor running.
