I hope you guys shed some light on this intermittent noise..
I have a 1.4 Petrol 2004 206S and in the last 8 weeks it’s been making quite an annoying and worrying noise.
At first I assumed it was coming from the rear, left hand side of the car, the noise sounded like I was being followed by a 1300cc motorbike.
As time has gone by the noise seems to be coming from the front left hand side, between 30-40mph (2000rpm) it’s very loud and can be felt, slightly through the brake pedal and steering wheel, over 40mph the noise is quieter and not felt through the steering wheel, although it doesn’t completely disappear.
Under heavy braking the car doesn’t pull to any side and under acceleration the steering seems fine.
Between 30-40mph, when it’s at it loudest the noise gets quieter (almost goes away) when I go round sharp right hand bends and is constant, at that speed, around left hand bends.
The noise is constant when coasting, in gear down a hill and when coasting out of gear.
Also, the car seems to be consuming more fuel than before, in March I averaged 335miles out of a full tank, in April 307miles and its heading for the same mileage this month, approximately 310miles, I’ve been driving conservatively the whole time and don’t lead foot around town.
One other strange thing I’ve noticed is, when I’m coasting, in gear, down a hill, the maximum MPG I get on the display is 178.8Mpg, it used to show infinity Mpg because the car was using its on momentum to travel down the hill, now it barely reaches 200Mpg.
I’ve recently had it serviced with new oil filter, oil, air filter and pollen filter, and the Mpg hasn't improved.
Please.. Any help, advice opinions welcome, I want to get it fixed this month but I’m concerned as to what it might be.
Thank you

Have you had any tracking/wheel balancing done recently?

Do you think one of the weights on the inside of the front left alloy may have come off?

Might be a CV joint on its way out, although never heard the noise they makes described like a motorbike.
The MPG could be completely unrelated.

Can you think of anything that might cause the car to actually use fuel when its moving on its own momentum?
Is a CV joint an expensive repair to fix?

Any clunks from the steering at low speed (like when parking and going to full lock?). I had a grumbling noise from a top mount and once freed up with grease (it wasn't worn, just seized) all was fine. Pop the caps off the top of the suspension struts in the engine bay and have a look at the rubbers for any signs of wear.
CV joints usually knock on full lock. Could be bearings in the early stages.
My brother suggested wheel bolts not torqued correctly hence the wheel vibrates slightly at certain speeds. Long shot but worth checking.
You haven't got any lumps or debris in your tyre?
If it happens at certain speeds that's a resonating effect at certain rpm's of the wheel which points to balancing I would guess. Uz is the man for wheels.
As for the fuel I would say that's unrelated to a wheel issue. If you're rolling downhill there's no engine effort hence the engine isn't working on moving the weight of the car so no fuel consumption. I had a sticking IC valve on my 1.4 8v and it destroyed my fuel economy. If you haven't tried Timon's thread on cleaning the throttle body and ICV give it a try. Even if it doesn't sort the problem totally you'll notice a real difference if it hasn't been done already. Timon's guide was spot on. It sounded a daunting task for a newbie but I had it done it 30 mins and it felt a different car.

Thamk you for the advice.
I thought it might be the balencing of the wheel as I had the tyre replaced approximatly 3 months ago, I will have a mechanice check out all the joints and areas around both wheels and see if there's any wear.
I cleaned the IC valve a few months ago, and it was very dirty, do you think it needs cleaning again?
When I put it back together, it appeared to sit back in place without any issues and I considered myself competant with that task, maybe ile take it apart and have another look.
