Hi Guys,

Have recently been getting a few oil splodges on my driveway, had a quick look at work today without taking the wheel off and it looks like there is what i thought was oil all over the subframe arm. I wiped it off thinking it was oil but it doesn't smell like oil and is a brown'ish colour... :S Could this is power steering fluid? I haven't noticed any differnece in the power steering other than in the mornings when i come out of my estate there is a tight left hand turn, i hear a loud whine noise, but only happens once :S

Any help much appreciated.

Power steering oil should be red, never known it to go brown even after being in a car for years.
The only fluid I can think goes brown is coolant, but even then it's more of an orangey rusty colour

it could have possibly been a dark red then, cloth was covered in loads of crap tbh. Could my steering rack be leaking?

My standard PAS oil was a dark colour. Not red.
2001 GTi 138, Bilstein Sprint dampers, H&R springs, 21mm Peugeot Sport torsion bars, 22mm rear ARB, Peugeot Sport Group A wishbones, 283mm discs, Goodridge stainless hoses, Maniflow 304 grade 4-2-1 2.5" manifold and system, 200 cell cat, Richard Longman head, 45mm Jenvey throttle bodies, 9.5mm TB spacers, 90mm air horns, Jenvey throttle linkage, Jenvey fuel rail, Aeromotive and Goodridge fuel fittings and braided hose, ITG sausage filter, Radtec custom radiator, Piper Ultimate Road cams, Piper vernier pulleys, Omex 600 ECU. Saxo electric PAS pump, Vibra Technics engine mounts. Samco coolant hoses, TTV steel flywheel, 4.76 final drive ratio, 307 CC 180 ratios. 2019 BMW 530i. 2017 Mercedes C300 convertible.

Easiest way to check is to check your oil and water levels, if you suspect the power steering then check the pump. My oil is a dark colour, I thought it was either red or blue.

Oil and water levels are fine, checked them a week ago. It's deffo not oil, doesn't smell like oil, It's like a dark red colour. If the rack is leaking, can I change seals or is it a new steering rack? And how easy is it to change?

Check the PAS pressure sensor (blue) with the 2 wires going to it.
#1 cause for leak in the PAS system, followd by pump itself.

Oily patches on my driveway (under the front passenger wheel assembly) were the result of a leaky drive shaft seal - the car has had two new drive shafts but they didnt do the seals at the same time (odd)

The fluid that came out of these smelt rather strong - Not a peugeot expert or anything - just sounds similar to mine Smile

The squeel you hear,if the fan belt is checked and tightened(should have no more or no less then a small pennys size (12mm)play up or down...thats tight but not overtight)is the power steering pump probably on its way out..

..if the fluid has been in for a long time it will smell more like gearbox oil than any other oil,and its probly just a case of having a really good luck where the leak originates...

Peugeot 206 Power steering oil is yellow color Smile

But back to the problem you have,check your power steering oil level,and make sure it's on the right level when cold,and when hot.

I'd just get the car up on some ramps and see where it's coming from.

ok thanks guys, any idea where i check the level of power steering fluid? I know where the cap is but can't see a way of checking the level. :S

Should be 3 marks on the stick inside the cap. Min, Cold and Hot.

Cold and hot? Am I missing something here? :S why would it have cold and hot marks?

one for measuring while the engine is hot, and one for measuring when the engine is cold?
