My car is dipping backwards when braking which indicates to me that it could be the Brake compensator.

Where about is this on the car, is it easily assessable so I can spray it with penetrating oil to try and free it up?

Its easy to get to. On the rear beam. Follow the pipes on the beam and it will lead u to it.

If you have one fitted, then it should be easy to see by sticking your head under the drivers side rear arch and looking at the swinging arm

Might be worth whipping the drums off and making sure there is plenty of meat on the shoes and they are not grabbing at the drum when you brake.

Nope not there I have taken off this beam to replace it recently so I know it does not have one.
Is it normal not to have one?

Not sure if the one in the picture is only for non ABS models.
You could have the pressure sensitive valve that is incorporated into the brake cylinder. As far as I know, these are not serviceable so would require the cylinder to be replaced.
