Looks like my Alternator is cactus. Rather than getting it reconditioned here, it's cheaper for me to buy a new one online from the UK. I did a quick search and it appears that there are all sorts of different brands of alternator...

Just curious, is there a particular brand which is better quality than the others? What should I go with?

Cheers.

Surely a service / exchange unit isn't that expensive down under?

Looking at $500 here to rebuild the existing one...I would rather just get a new one from the UK for $380 delivered. To buy a new one here is $1000.

Just another question. The model of Alternator on my car at the moment is a Valeo brand. A quick call to Peugeot quoting my VIN number says the part number for the Alternator is 5705KY. Do I need to use this specific part number and brand or will others fit as well? I've seen Bosch, Denso etc with different part numbers...there are so many!!

The part numbers are all different because the housing or case will be the same on pretty much them all but there are variables like type of connector and at which angle the connector sits, type of pulley, size of belt and then there's different outputs depending on the engine size and electrical sysem. Your best option is to take some pictures of yours and compare it to any you find for sale where you can see the actual part

I think the make of alternator fitted depended on who was supply Peugeot at the time.
As long as you get one with matching part number, you should have no problem fitting it. Peugeot wouldn't list a single part number and then have different fittings on all the options. If you went to the dealer and asked for the part number, you would probably get whichever one the factory sent to them.

Is there no places in Australia that do service exchange recon models. Normally works out a lot cheaper, and if the ones at $380 are secondhand, it might be better to pay the extra $120 so you know you are getting one that isn't going to fail in a few weeks.

If you know what's wrong with yours you could buy the parts and rebuild it yourself.

And if not too sure on how, there are vids of repairing/rebuilding alternators on youtube that might be of help.
