if i buy a second hand key fob off ebay, can i program it in with peugeot planet or not? i mean i know you cant program a used bsi unit, but is the key the same? as ive only got 1 key with the car

It will need a blank immo chip installed and there's a slight risk of it not working and/or getting 'locked-out' of the BSI and making your car a non-starter.

when you buy a used key,you will need a new immo chip as V9977 said,but if you want to have a key with 2 buttons working,then you need to make sure the the circuit board "Letter" in the end of the Serial number matches the one you have,and ofcourse you need the 4 digit security code so you can program both keys on your car

If you get the right circuit board, yes. I think there are 3 for multiplex and they depend on if front fogs are fitted for some strange reason.
Some BSIs are programmed to accept a certain number of remotes. I think you need to delete all keys and then reprogram the keys that you have.
The new key will be useless to start the car though unless you get a virgin transponder chip and pair that with the car. These chips can only be used once, so if one comes with the used key, it can't be reprogrammed.

I hate to burst the bubble. I was unsuccessful I bought a second hand board, same number as the board in my first key, sorted the chip out,, and Boom didnt work!
and the worst thing is, i did everything right which is stated above.

i had this post on the peugeot forum for 2 days and i had no replies, and straight off you have answered my question, thanks guys, i only bought the car to sell on, i will give the new owner this problem.

same thing happened to me.. on PP the car is picking up the signal but doesnt recognise it to open or lock the doors.

A new multiplexed remote key isn't that expensive from Peugeot, why do people bother with the hassle of 2nd hand keys

I would say either 6554YR or 6554YV
