Read the fault codes that are now stored in the ecu memory as the codes will point you in the general direction of the fault.

My missus's gti has done this twice in the last couple of weeks, usually after several days of not running.Starts up ok but quickly begins to chug and misfire as if the choke is on.
Warning for cat fault comes up and ecu light.
I have a cheapo code reader and it reports "random cylinder misfire" can't recall the actual fault no.I clear the fault code and it runs fine, until the next time.
I'm going to replace the coolant temp sensor as a start point.
Buy yourself an OBD 2 reader off ebay, can be less than £15.Doddle to use and you can save a packet of £.in garage charges.

Half the time cheap obd2 readers don't actually give the actual reason because the 206 didn't have obd2 diagnostics. Early ones were a peugeot hybrid and later EOBD.
A peugeot compatible one would probably tell you exactly which cylinder is misfiring ... but it is likely it's the coil pack from the symptoms.
