Hi chaps, Im after some help with a problem on our 206, its a 55 plate non multiplex 1.4 8v petrol and it broke down on me two days ago. It just wouldnt rev past 2k, then it got worse and it just cut out everytime i touched the throttle.
We have tried a code reader on it and its fault free so we put a crank sensor on it, Delphi pattern part, and it improved things, it then would rev to just past 4k. It just seems to hit a limiter, it gets there the battery light flashes on and the revs drop then the light goes off and it then reved back to 4k. Sometimes it misses sometimes not
So this morning I drove it to work keeping the revs down and changed the plugs..... it got worse (changed back after), back to reving to 2k. So we plugged in the laptop with Peugeot Planet 2000 installed and its still coming up fault free!! So tomorrow were changing the coil pack! Worried were clutching at straws though to be honest

Any advice people??

Shut it u stupid little f**k, what's the point in posting in all my treads being such a c***? Least I can afford a gti180, and to get the cam belt done!

So apparently everyone knows my financial situation? If I wanted a 180 I would have bought a 180 simples Smile

Could be a re-registered model from pre-2001

No EML? You are clutching at straws really. I wouldn't go with coil pack. Possibly crank sensor, do a search on limp mode, that's what it sounds like.

A car in limp mode with no faults recorded would, I suspect, be unusual.

The OP stated that the car gets to 4,000 rpm and then the battery (charge?) light comes on and then the revs die until the cycle starts again.

If the alternator isn't charging will this car and its ecu reduce the revs? Could it be that the alternator brushes are bouncing or badly worn or other electrical component within the alternator is failing at high revs or high output, loosing the charge and the car seeing that and killing the revs.

Another thought is also around the battery light coming on. When that happens just how low is the voltage dropping to? Is it dropping low enough that the ecu starts to shut down or other electrical systems aren't getting enough voltage to respond correctly such as:-
Coil pack?
Throttle motor (if fly by wire.)
ECU?
Other sensors or controls?

It might be worth monitoring battery voltage while driving - will PP do that? If it won't or you don't have PP wire a volt meter into the car and drive it while monitoring voltage to see just how low the battery voltage is dropping to when the light comes on. With no fault codes I think that would be my next step.

One further thought. Could there be a loose wide or one that is shorting and that only occurs when the engine reaches 4000rpm and the vibrations at those revs cause it to short?

A long shot but possible. Check all wires, connections, battery connections and earth points.

I'd agree with a drop in voltage. Just check on the battery or output of alternator with a multi meter?
