What is the advised mileage to get the timing belt changed and how can you tell if it's on it's way out?
Also is there a way to check if this has been changed without a service history?
It's a 1.4 2002 HDI with 80,000 miles if that helps.

Wouldn't wait nowhere near that long. 60k or five years is generally the rule of thumb for many cars. Prevention is better than the cure

Yeah there is no real way of telling when it is on its way out... And it only has to be weakened by as little as 5% to be compromised

If it has done 80k and you haven't got any documentation to say it has been done then best to get it done asap.
Cheaper to get it changed than having to pay for the repairs later or even a new engine!

The belt on this engine is recommended to change at 144k,same engine in fiesta 150k,or ten years, obviously I would change it a bit sooner, but 60k or 5 years is over cautious by along way.

It's 80,000 miles or every 10 years so I'd get it changed. If it goes you're looking at a new engine which is very, very costly.
I'm thinking of getting mine done soon - you'll be looking at around £130 with parts and labour if you get a decent deal.

| Peugeot 206 GTI 180.
Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere. | |
