Very good read mate! I just wanted more stuff to happen! Hurry up and do an engine conversion! I think Carlos put the 3.0 V6 into his Pug, but I'm not sure. Someone will correct me.

That was it. His username is C4RLOS I think. Wasn't there someone on here dropping a 3 litre engine in somewhere?!

Sorry for such an immense lack of updates. That is because the car hasn't moved.

Today saw the purchase of...

*drumroll*

a Multiplexed (2002) Tu5JP engine... 1.6 8v. With 53k on the clock.

Also picked up a semi-sport clutch which should be good for 160 bhp easilly enough.

As the TU5JP engine is basically the TU1JP with slightly different internals, the thought is that everything will bolt on.

Stage 1 is to make the car actually start with the TU5JP in place. We are working on the car all weekend to get the engine fitted, and then come up with a list of any possibly issues.

There is about an 80% chance that the engine will just start. I waited a good couple of months to find a multiplexed TU5JP. Almost all of the NFZ code engines are pre-plexed pug varieties.

This one is actually a Saxo VTR engine. But a 2002 Roland Garros engine would have done the job as well. I realised I had either 2.5 years of saxo engine lifecycle to look for (2002-2004) or about 4 months of Roland Garros car that would have had the right loom/engine combo.

SO we get to work fitting the engine this weekend. Obviously there will be pics, so I should have a big update for you soon.

Once the car actually runs up with this engine, obviously first stop will be the remap people to see whether the existing ECU is tunable enough to do the trick for me; IE whether we can successfully upload a 1.6 map and then tailor it. IF not, then I need to get the ECU unlocked or look elsewhere for management. But I know the same Bosch and siemens ECUs live in all of these engines. So worst case scenario is getting it unlocked. With an ECU as old as this, hopefully red dot can do that without any problems. All the encryption codes are known now I think...

Face.

So, I've crunched a few numbers:

The stock 98bhp engine will see a power to weight ratio without driver of approx 122 bhp. IF the engine makes that. Assumption 1.
A standard GTI at 1215kg is producing approx 110 bhp so I should, with my fat self at the wheel - be on a very similar laptime to the GTi after turning the key.

Newman cams, Induction filter, sports cat and appropriate remap would hopefully see me at 115-118 bhp. That is a realistic gains estimate. At this point my power to weight is around the 150 bhp/topne mark.

Following on from that, a raceland 4-2-1 and getting a multi-angle valve cut on the head (this one will only happen if I'm very confident and can see some proven gains ... ), plus again adjusting the map: Should allow more like 130 bhp. This is the reasonable "budget modders" limit I feel. That would see me having spent the following on the engine phase:

£220 engine
£150 clutch
£100 gearbox
£200 remapping
£160 mani
£200 engine internals work
£130 cams

Total 1160

..To go from 76 bhp to 130 bhp. Representing a percentage gain of 72% power, or a BHP per £ sterling cost of £21 per BHP gained.

SO all I'm really proving is that bigger really means better. But when you look at the power gain I could have here, for the numbers it's cost me - then compare it to that DP engineering turbo thread (13k!!! JESUS!!! ).

Then hopefully I've made a good decision Very Happy

I'm sure there will be problems all of which I will post here so you guys can be the judges of that.

How come you've gone for the 8v engine and not the 16v ?
