I sold mine because it was too expensive to run, and tbh I didn't use it enough.. and I went to something half the speed.. lol.

If mine goes, it'll be because I've gone to something 4WD / AWD. Two years running now the pug has got stranded in the snow where I live!
Overall though, I think for the money they're great little motors, especially as I do 12 miles a day normally. A tank of petrol lasts a month and I'm getting 35mpg which is alright for the journey I do. It's up to about 85k miles and other than the usual (back box, brakes, coil pack and the ubiquitous COM2000 unit!) nothing really has gone wrong with it.
BUT I know it's coming!

Same is going on here with the people on the local Club/Forum I'm in.
Only Iran still manufactures the pug. Argentina stopped selling it in 2009 changing for the crappy 206+. Even that, accesories and parts are still very expensive.
But IMO it's the life that goes on. You get married, you got children. The pug becomes obsolete if you don't have enough for a 2nd car. I think that's the main reason for people like me who are not into the nowadays consumer chaos.
But I have only just one kid, so the pug is going to still at least for a while. And I love it, despite all the low points you've mentioned.
Next car is a Golf VI TSI 1.4 turbo (maybe the Mk VII generation).

The 206 is a great wee starter car in smaller engine formats, cheap to run, insure and even buy at the moment! The sportier models are cheap and cheerful. I plan on running the 180 for quite a wee while then i'll save up for some form of Evo XI for when i'm 25  ...that's the choice at the moment anyway...i kinda fancy an evo 8 as well, black with some bronze wheels...mmm  boooooooooost.

I get in the wifes 207CC and I realise why people say VW's are much better built. Even as soon as I adjust the rear view mirror it feels creaky and brittle. As you pull the door shut the trim and handle flex towards you.
Like most people though I'm comparing a £20k car with what is basically a £12k car with a £6k folding roof. It's not fair to compare them.
To compare a similarly aged 206 to an identically aged Polo actually doesn't make the 206 seem too bad. A 2001 Polo is not really that nice a car.

Not from what I have seen. The Polo won't fall apart easily, its still part of the built to last theme.
I know someone with an early 1999 model 1.4 it ran up 195,000miles before it needed any major work. It did over 100k before the tracking needed to be looked at. 
Now if you were to compare a 2001 Fiesta again they are solid but the amount of rust on them is noticeable. Less issues possibly because its the less modern Mk5.
But my 2002 206 has an overheating gremlin, an irritating sump gasket oil leak, its had the com2000 replaced, it has had few electrical glitches. Not the sort stuff that should go wrong on a 60,000mile car. It doesn't get a hard life and it probably has a better service history than most on this site.

I've noticed that on here that people either love or hate the 206 because of reliability issues. Until a year ago I've always owned a Ford. I think the CVH engines on the escorts were very reliable when well maintained. But when my old Ford failed its MOT last september with a few days left before my tax disc ran out I saw and bought a low mileage 206 quiksilver on the internet. I thought I might regret this (after other owners experiences) but the the pug has been perfect even through that winter at the beginning of the year.
PS) It will probably start falling apart now because my MOT is next week.
