I've had both the 138 and the 180.
They were both reasonably cheap to keep.
The 180 is by far the best, but having a louder exhaust (Janspeed) it was not as enjoyable on long motorway journeys. Fast country roads make up for this though!

The 138 was more economical (mine was remapped to 141bhp) - 33-35mpg, whilst my 180 did 27-30mpg.
The 180 rewards you every mile you drive though.
If you can afford to run the 180 you're unlikely to regret it.

Tuning a 138 to 200bhp won't change the fact that the gears and steering aren't as good as on the 180. You'll need upgraded suspension, brakes, and probably seats too. Then there's the ESP to consider.
Would it be worth it? Especially come resale time. Unlikely.

No they aren't, because a GTi180 is about 165-170 bhp Laughing

Plus they were never meant to be 180bhp, they were 177

I think that the 180 blows the gti away. Its styling is spot on along with the extra power as standard. You would spend you £100 modifying the gti and still not be anywhere near a 180 performance. The seats are great in the 180 as well. V nice car. I have one in my drive.... cant afford to insure it as a second car but even just sitting in it makes me feel great Smile

Obviously the 180 is a better car.. but Im not looking for anything really fast and to spend loads on..

End of the day im 19 years old.. so a GTi would be ideal for me.

A nice confy car with a bit of grunt in it.

Ive looked at the prices of both in everyway, and the GTi would be the better option i think.

But If I see a decent cheap 180 then Ill deffo go for it, thanks Smile

The gearing on the 180 is taller overall therefore isn't as good...there's nothing wrong with the steering on the 138...the 180 steering is hardly full of feel.
if going for 200bhp+ you'd be changing the suspension to something far better than the 180 setup while 180 brakes on the 138 are perfectly adequate. Nothing wrong with the 138 GTi seats and ESP isn't needed on such cars as it takes the skill away from driving them hard...

If your such an expert, why did you make the thread in the first place? & Edward sounds just a tad biased going by his sig don't you think? At the end of the day it's your choice, but standard 180 v's standard gti, the 180 is the better car, end of story.

Yes 'cause I said Im an expert on 206's......

I made the thread asking are they much quicker and whats the MPG on the 180 if you would read it properly,

And obviously the 180 is a better car end of.
I never said it wasnt.

But like ive said previously, the GTi is the better choice as there isnt much between personaly.

Drive both a 138 and 180.
See the difference, then decide if either car is what you want Smile

So why agree with Edward if you think the 180 is 'obviously a better car'? Judging by your lower spec & performing astra & you now opting for a lower spec & performing 206 can you really insure a 180, or are you dreaming?

read these kinda threads before and it always seems to be people with gti 138's that say the 180 isnt better noone with a 180 ever says dont bother get a normal gti that should tell you something Smile
i knoooooow that the 180 isnt that much faster iv heard it a million times before its getting boring now but tbh i tested both before i bought mine and knew if i didnt get the 180 id always wish i had.
its not just about the power they are more comfortable have a few more extras looks are a bit more agressive and feel a lot more sure footed true there isnt a great deal of difference between the two but if you can find a reasonably priced 180 and the insurance isnt a problem do it Smile
iv had mine for 3 and a half years now done 45k in it and loved every second of it and have no intentions what so ever to sell up any time soon Very Happy

It's like choosing between these 2 women, this one will be cheaper to get & look after & will probably do everything you want in the real world. You can then justify your choice by saying there's more room for modification & through rose tinted glasses you can even say she doesnt need fancy fittings, let's call her 138

But if you were told this one looks & does things even only slightly better, lets call her 180, why wouldn't you go for her unless you knew you couldn't really afford or handle her?
