The other day my daft bat of a mother borrowed my car to go to work and returned back at the house a few moments later, smoke pouring from the radiator.

The garage took it in and said it had overheated, and that there wasn't enough coolant in the system so they topped it up and left it sitting for a night.

Got the car back and it drives fine, however whenever the car is at low speed in 1st gear, the engine temperature gauge shoots waaay up to 90 degrees, but then returns to 70ish when driving at higher speeds

common problem or is something properly wrong?

Sounds like the electric cooling fan isnt working.
Check to see if the electric radiator fan kicks in at about 90, if it doesnt it is probably the thermo switch failed. (or a fuse blown)
