i was wrong about the r32, i presumed that they would be cheap as mate got hold of a 34 for 4k ... god why would anyone buy a 04gti there is no point whatsoever you might as well get a 180 but what im saying is that gtis can be bought for 800, 180s cant even at 2k a 180 is a steal

personally i wouldn't spend any less then 3k on a 180 if i was to get one, you got lucky with yours, but what im pointing out is a gti from 2000 can be bought for like 800 and 180 are more then double well over 1.6 k and you can buy and insure a gti for less then it cost to just buy a 180. that's the point here man he wants practical advice and if year of car dont matter to you nor does the tiny bit of power, you might as well buy a old gti but if you want the daddy 206 get a 180 you really have missed my point all together its not a trade off its telling the guy why the gti is worth buying opposed to the 180 and vise versa there are reason for both, there is no reason to spend 2.5 to 3.5 on a normal gti unless its like 5k mileage its totally pointless because thats 180 money

The point was that if the OP is thinking about a 138 or a 180, so I assume he would be paying a similar amount for either car. That would be a 138 of the same age, hence why the price comparisons were made.

If you only want a normal GTi (weren't the Phase 1's 136's?) then yes, you would get a c. 1k GTi.

omg its like beating my head against a wall, i agree there is no point buy a 04 gti but you can get a old one for f*** all and that has to be taken into account, if all the guy wants to know is that a 04 180 is worth buying over a 04 gti then yes, no reason not to, but im putting a valid point across that you keep bypassing, you can buy a gti and insure its for less then 2k in fact in some cases you could do it for less then 1.5 but no way can you even buy a 180 for that. see what im getting at?

Of course I understand your point, if I wanted a normal GTi, I would be buying the best one I could afford though. Especially with 206's, we all know they're not renowned for their reliability.

A sub 1k GTi is still a cheap, old car worth next to nothing when you come to sell/trade up. If that's what you want, then fine. It's reassuring to know my car is worth something and I could easily sell it and get something relatively decent.

Anyway, I wouldn't be getting a 206 with the money Smile

You can't compare a later model gti to a 180 because of course you would opt for the 180.

BUT, with choice between a 52 reg gti with 60k on the clock for £1800 compared to a 53 reg 180 with 40k for £3000 is a different ball game entirely.

when it comes to cost, the minimum you can get a 180 for is 2k right? so with a gti being say 800 cheapest the difference is is over 100% if you went into currys and had a choice between a old version tv which wasnt much dfferent to the new model but the new one cost over double is it worth it, im not saying the example works perfect for cars but its over double the comparing the cheapest of both cars, know the cheapest ones probably are shitters but its the most equal comparison, no where here have i seen e5gdm ever compare them correctly, comparing a 04 of both really isnt a fair comparison, the new gti versus a old 180 will always favour the newer model regardless of miles and age, fact is id rather have a 180 anyday of the week but if budget dictates which can usually be the case with rip off insurance my argument is more then valid so dismissing it is stupid, thing to remember here is im not a 180 nut huger but i can admit its better car which it is am only stating why some people buy gtis and some buy 180s

and i agree you would want the best but comparing the cars you need to think realistically and 180 are a different cost to gtis unless the gti is a 04 plate with low miles

there is no reason to get a gti if you can afford a 180, but if insurance makes it overall a few grand different including extra cost of the car. then it probably isnt worth it, a few hundred then it is

If you can afford it, get the 180, it is a better car.

It is all down to your budget and what you have set for it.

The whole bases of Yours & loftys argument was that 180's were double the cost of a 138 & that the extra money wasn't worth it. Now that theory has been blown out of the water, your comparing, in your words, 'a shitter' 138 worth £800 to a mint low milage 04 180. & you reckon my comparison isn't fair?
Of course if you want a 'shitter' for £800 there's more chance of getting a 138 as they've been out longer, but pound for pound, the only other reason not to get a 180 over a 138 is if you can't afford the running costs.
