Can anybody help? I have quite a loud rattley knocking noise coming from the engine of my 1.4 hdi, its mainly when its idleing it sounds like something is knocking together. Gets really annoying and is quite embarrasing. Its ok pulling away and when driving however you can hear it again when slowing down. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks

Mine did that... Turns out it was the crank pulley. £108 new from Pug... Not too bad.

I have exactly the same problem on a 2000 1.6 petrol glx. Is there a how to guide on this anywhere (couldn't find one on here) or is this rediculously easy?
Also is it safe to drive or am I going to ruin the engine?

Defo the crank pulley, had to renew mine recently, £55 off ebay, fitting is a very easy diy.

No, the pulley rattles when its u/s but it doesnt affect engine performance in any way.

No, as on HDI's the bottom pulley can debond and rattle
Compared to TU engines which have a static pulley, yours has another problem unfortuantly

Ah thats not good. Any ideas what it could be. Sounds like it could be coming from the CAT or exhaust manifold.

It's a fairly common occurance for the cat to break up and cause a rattle as it is quite a fragile/brittle construction and easily damage if the exhaust receives a sharp knock.............could well be the problem in your case.
