most of the time its the topmount bearings more than the top mount it self. bearing are only somthing like £30 to buy for a pair.

Its a straight forward job, but the shock absorbers are a pain to get back in unless you have some shortened shocks

Did you ever get this sorted? My other half's 206 started doing this tonight.
Can't feel anything through the steering and there's no noise until you turn the steering wheel.

Mine did this Ali, if it's like a 'clunk' kinda knock check the condition of the topmounts, my bearings had dried up so just replaced the full topmounts, since then I've had no knocking - The worse they get the more knocks can be heard.. Starts with just one as your going to full lock, then you get 3-4 as they get worse lol.

This knocks if you so much as move the steering wheel an inch or so. It was never noticeable before and the car's only on 60000 miles.

Hmmmmmm, it's still a possibility and usually the problem when it comes to knocks, but doing it when you just start to turns abit eek! lol
Dont think it'll be the CV joints, turning the wheels that little doesnt move them that much does it?!
How's the balljoints on the wishbones? Also the droplinks could be shot as they move quite alot when turning - well they twist at the joints, I've had droplinks fail after about 15000 miles.
