Just checked girlfriends car oil and topped up with about 1/2 litre.While doing this i noticed a white/yellow gunge on oil cap not much.I also checked dipstick which just has oil on.Is this something to be worried about as i know when water gets into the oil it can cause this gunge.The car has used roughly about 1/2 litre water over a year and done 5000 miles.

Could be something as minor as condensation or major as head gasket failure.
Get it checked out

How much use does the car get?
If its only do short trips around town then the engine wont be getting up to a decent temp to burn the condensation of.

If it does short runs it's fairly normal. Just make sure you take it for a decent long run once in a while.

She only uses it to got to work about 10 min drive and 10 min back

That's the problem solved then 
It needs to go on a nice long / high speed run to get the engine temp up to burn the condensation of from inside the engine.

normal for this time of year mate, if there's none on the stick, and its not steaming from the exhaust once its fully warmed up i wouldent worry about it. i was recently at a large garage and asked the dude about this and he showed me the caps off of all of the cars one by one. most of them had a bit of white cream on the filler cap

we going away next weekend will take her car for the long run.On the point about it losing about 1/2 litre of water over a year is this also normal.Has i drive a company car i dont worry about these things lol.Thanks guys

Check / top up all the levels & pressures before you go away.
Once there leave the car overnight & check the coolant level again & see if its lost any.
I've always found engines find there own coolant level between the max & min marks on the bottle no matter how many times you top it back up to the max one

how many miles does it have on it? it could have a slow water leak
ive had leaks before where you loose about 1/2 litre over 6 months and cant see any on the ground (evaporates too fast and only leaks when coolants under pressure)
looks for crystal deposits around any joints on water pipes
if it is leaking into cylinders through the gasket you will notice steam out the exhaust even after a long journey. take it for the drive, but before you turn the engine off when you are at your destination look at the exhaust to check for this.
not 100% sure but if you were loosing this into the engine i recon there would be alot more cream/sludge then just a bit on the cap

p.s i agree with this, we have a ka that always settles its coolant level just below the min mark, then sites there indefinitely. if I top it up to the max it looses it untill just below the min again really fast, then sites there forever haha. strange

its got 72000 miles and this is first time ive topped it up for a year.left the engine running while i cleaned it this morning cant see any leaks could be a small leak on radiator?Also not lost any water while doing this.

i really wouldnt worry about it mate. 1/2 over an entire year is not much tbh. i wouldnt call that a problem, just keep your eye on it. as said make sure its topped up before you go and check the levels again when at your destination. also couldnt hurt to have your oil changed if its overdue (not related to water loss in anyway) but i always like to get it changed before a long journy if its needed anyway

What engine is it?
72K miles is getting very near timing belt replacement if its a TU petrol lump
