I'm picking up a GTi on Monday.
Was going to drive it for a week or so.
I'll make a note of what milage & fuel I use

Basically, the car (and any engine related performance mods that might affect the MPG) the type of fuel, driving style and the all important MPG.

Also depends though on where you're diving etc.
I've been driving really conservatively over my last tank of petrol and only got 280 miles from the tank. The problem I have is that the car mainly just goes from home to work and back, which is 10 minutes away, so the car is constantly stop-start and only just gets warm by th time I've got to work and the same coming home.

Aye, I tend not to look at my MPG any more as it's always crap due to the town driving I do 
Indeed, tend to not be on here as much anymore to be honest. Not so many familiar face no more.

I have a 1.4HDI, bog standard and used only in the past year for a short trip to work etc. No long runs or Motorway journeys at all.
I always get a receipt for the diesel I buy and note the overall mileage on it.
(**Start off and end with a tank full)
During the whole of 2010 I managed an average of 57.88 mpg, so that is very acceptable for an old high mileage car.
The average price for diesel worked out at £1.20 per litre during the year. (Price ranged from £1.09 - £1.33 a litre). That's 9.4 pence a mile
Road tax was £30 a year, too - Another money saver consideration.
My tips for added fuel economy:-
Check tyre pressures once a week and keep them inflated by the book - Wider than normal tyres will of course lower your mpg.
Keep your windows closed at all times to prevent drag. In the summer use the aircon in small bursts only, to stay cool.
Don't fill the tank to the brim; ** only at the start and end of the test - A 50 litre tankfull weighs around 112 pounds, (50 kg), about the weight of a small female passenger ! That means less mpg.

Oh I can add that I got 16mpg in my 2002 GTi when driving it hard around a track.
Fuel was super unleaded with 1 passenger, rear seats & excess weight removed.

Right Guys.
My Dad's been driving my 03 plate 1.6 16v XSi which is my daily driver for about the last week and a half. No he travels to a different location within the England on a daily basis so as his daily he's got a Jag X-Type Diesel 2.0 which gives him between 740 and 770 miles to a brim'd tank.
Now...
Last Monday he Brim'd the tank on my XSi with £63 worth of 97 Ron Unleaded Petrol. Drove it everyday, not gunna go into the nitty gritty of where each location everyday was but it's trips to like Rotherham, Wolverhampton, Nottingham etc, somedays goes to multiple locations. So 75% motorway driving and my dads doing no more then 65. Likes taking it easy.
Now On Friday he came home and checked the mileage etc to see what he was getting etc as he was quite interested to see. The car had just got to the quarter of the tank mark and was at 430 miles on the trip computer. Average MPG was at 47.8 and average speed was at 37mph.
By Sunday evening and the car on the second red light the car had done 540 miles.
Now I've had a brim'd tank but I like the more sprinted driving. Alot of country lanes, alot of bypass', alot of dual carriages etc. Travel up to Brum alot and to Worcester for Uni as well as other places like stratford and redditch. Also do the school runs and other little bits and bobs etc.
Now to a full tank of petrol I get 370 miles and a average mpg of 36.
Quite alot of difference and from this you can see it's all about how you drive your car.

i haven't really tried to keep a note of my mpg,my 2000 gti doesn't have a onboard computer so i solely need to rely on simple maths and either fill the tank completely up or wait until the light comes on and work on that basis.only downside with using the light method is that it's not entirely accurate but as of late i can't afford to fill the tank completely full
anyway's.....my first test showed that i was getting roughly 33mpg which isn't too bad as i commute on the a84/a85 which is twisty roads with a mixture of tight bends,fast sweeping bends a some short straight with the occasional long straight.i tried to take it easy and maintain 60 ish most of the time except for overtaking.even then i tried to not accelerate hard but when the mood takes you 
my gti is bog standard and possibly a service would improve it slightly.i'll keep a note of it over the next few weeks and see how it goes.

I have a 1.6 8v with a 3" sportex backbox. I usually go for the Shell V-Power and driving on the Isle of Man, with lots of start, stops, hills and up and down the gears I average around 37-38 MPG.
EDIT: That's driving carefully, with the occasional blast on the derestricted roads
