travelling along the motorway, the car momentarily 'hesitated' causing me to jolt forward, then carried on normally before turning the engine management light on, any suggestions?

What model is your car?
PM Lee if you decide to get the ECU read, he might not be to far away from you depending where you are in Notts, think he only charges £20-£25

What model car is it, if its a 180 mine did pretty much the same thing when the VVT solenoid/sensor stopped working.

getting the ecu scanned by lee is your best shout, if it doesn't tell you exactly whats wrong it'll at least give us something to go off ^_^

surprise surprise, fault light gone when the time came to plug the reader in, no faults showing as stored. still none the wiser, somebody mentioned the EGR valve being carboned up as a possibility?

The codes still should be stored in the ECU, they don't go until cleared.
What code reader did you end up using?

I'd just be tempted to leave it mate, as it didn't come back on after we fired it up twice and revved it a bit.
Plus it was a old code by the looks of it.
Did the reverse gear thing work btw?
