When turning the steering wheel on my gti at low speeds or stopped I get a loud knock or creak from the front of the car. This happens twice when turning from centre to full lock left or right. It also happens with the car stopped and engine off. The car handles ok otherwise. Thanks for any help/advice.

the way to test for both is jack it up, get some 1 to help, turn the steering wheel, and look at the strut see if its all moving over the place, put a screw driver to you ear and agasint the strut mount and listen to it, for ball joint, jacked up get some 1 to move steering wheel and feel and look at the joing if its is moving at the base then its had its day, also pull the wheel about if it has play could be either

bottom ball joint will be a new arm, just replaced these too and they can be abit of a pain if your doing it on jacks but not so bad if a hoist is used.

strut top bearings require the spring to be compressed to allow bearing removal. This will mean strut removal from the car again abit fiddly if you ain't got proper tools

If in doubt, drop a cog and put your foot down Smile
