Due to the savage knocking underneath/at the front of my car i decided to have a look this morning despite the absolute misery that is Welsh weather. Took the wheel off, had a browse and came across this laying quite happily on my wishbone. My question is where is it from and what does it do apart from rest on wishbones.

Sure its something like that, holds the joint to the arm :S
Pretty sure its important and shaped like that so it doesnt fall out.
Top bolt must have come loose and fell off or snapped

Well it's not the bolt that holds the hub onto the ball joint, not the hub to damper bolt, not the top mount bolts..not a brake caliper bolt...
What's the bolt that holds the driveshaft middle bearing into the engine mount look like?

If that's where it lives you can just about see where it comes from on this picture...
It's just below the shaft bearing...

Yes, it will cause knocking, and will cause ware on the bearing while it's not fitted, I would get it back on quick.
