I am thinking of buying a T reg 206 SX (1600) but have a couple of questions: apologies if this is in the forum somewhere I did a brief search and couldn't find anything.

Are these a carburettor engine? If so, do they tend to have problems on emissions at the dreaded MoT time?

The reading at the last MoT was .29%, the limit seems to be .3%. I have no idea whether the air cleaner etc. were replaced before this test.

May be of significance, there is a slight hesitation when you blip the throttle from idling, it may be an exhaust problem (a bit of a waggle when the engine shakes a little) as it does need a new (back?) box.... if you follow that.

Also, the drivers door mirror is hanging off: it's not wrecked but I wondered if there is a common thing where something pops out that can be popped back in.

It's not exactly perfect on the hatch, there are 2 areas of rust below the window rubber, which seem to coincide with where there are rubbers inside the car on the parcel shelf (strange, I know, but that seems to be the position). Is this a common problem and if so what's the "usual" cause?

Lastly, is it difficult to do a cam belt on these? I have heard that on the 306 it's a pig, you have to take an engine mount off. I guess they are pretty normal and it's best to change the tensioner(s?) and water pump so would do them, but are there any fancy clamping tools or belt tensioning tools which would suggest it's better done by a garage?

Do I buy this 206??

There Fuel Injection engines to start with

And simple answer NO dont buy it, i had one so im not just saying Wink

Try and get a newer model, IE after 04, Try the 1.4 16v or 1.6 16v

Carbs were phased out in the early 90's

Exhausts are pretty bad but easy to replace

Cam belts are pretty easy too Smile

I wouldn't bother with one that age, If you want a 206 go for something newer or if it's a cash thing go for something else.

You do realise that most small hatchbacks from 1999, are going to be in a worse state than a 206.

At least the engines are reliable and they dont rust much Cool

Weeeellllll... I had thought you guys (and gals) might be a bit more enthusiastic!

Whilst I do value your knowledge and experience, there are some motivating factors in why I may get it, so please give me a little more info:

what exactly is so cr*ppy about them (it can't be everything!)

is a T reg 1.6 SX single point or multi-point (I feel multi point is a little less of an issue if emissions are out of spec, but cannot find any direct suppliers of individual injectros as such)

do they tend to be a bit high on the CO emissions, or could this suggest a (common but easily sorted?) problem

is this going to be a 8V motor or 16V?

The emission level may be due to and old CAT on its way out or just full of sh*te.

With the enthusiasm, everyone has good and bad experieces. I love my 206 and rave about it, others have had better cars/bad experiences meaning they don't rate them. However for the money you pay they are a cracking car! Make sure you buy one that is looked after. Smile

Why are you set on a 1.6 T reg?

Why would you want a 1.6 XS and be bothered by emissions on a pre-2001 car? Road tax isn't an issue, and the emissions you spoke of are within the limit.

It is 12 years old and will show the ravages of time if not looked after and driven regularly.
You are obviously on a budget, and this car sounds like a neglected example tbh.

The XS model isnt so bad when looked after. If its serviced regulary its quite decent. If you want it, go for it! Apparently on the 8v lumps like the xs the cambelt is not that hard to do at all.

Thanks for the replies folks, getting a better handle on stuff now. I do appreciate some folks will have had bad experiences so that can colour their judgement.
Yes budget is a consideration, so fuel economy, insurance and road tax are part of the equation at the mo.
On the other side (not just wanting any cheap car) it's not so much I am set on an XS as such, but the 206 does seem to be a comfortably sized car for me (6'3, so stuff like Fiesta's of this age range aren't brilliant: I fancied a Polo CL which have adjustable seat and steering column but there are the considerations of geaboxes going bang at about 100K).
I fancied a 306 but some of them are scabby. In the longer term I am thinking of something with an HDi in it. C5's can be pretty cheap but too big for the garage, once I have tried a 206 I may well go for a later HDi.
The reason I am going down this particular path is that it's someone I know who is selling it, and it is not in awful condition (OK a rusty wing and tail gate... but I can live with that. I am pretty sure much newer ones will be interchangeable so no big deal there). Am OK with the spanners so can get it fettled on the bodywork and cam belts are seemingly easy enough.
I hear there can be electrical problems but again no worries for me, altho I don't have any diagnostic kit I have worked in the electronics industry for years so stuff like central locking and electric windows hold no fears. It's only got 73K on the clock so thats a plus point.

Seems like I should have written all of this in the section of the forum where newbies introduce themselves... but oh well LOL.

Not sure I follow the bit about why I would want an XS and be bothered by emissions on a pre-2001 car, surely a pre-2001 car has to pass? I concede yes emissions is one issue I do have concerns over, a bit of paranoia maybe LOL. I was thinking of it possibly being a (worn out) carb or maybe a (worn) throttle body if it was single point injection so was thinking it might be expensive to sort out. I concede I hadn't thought of it just being a cat jobbie, not dirt cheap but a simple replacement: MoT is due soon (March). I will have to see if I can find out how long the present owner has had and if that's been replaced.

Not put in an offer yet, she has been offered £850 by webuyanycrap.com but thats before they have seen it and she knows they will knock it down (and it would apparently cost her 50 quid for the privilege). Am thinking somewhere between wisebyuyers.com guidelines between poor (£370) and average (£720) but I doubt she would bite if I said 500 quid. So I may just let it go.... but then I may never know if a 206 HDi is the car of my dreams Confused

The emissions could be down to a faulty lambda sensor or it could need a good thrashing to blow the crap out of it. It does sound like the car is a bit of a pup tbh. If you buy it and need any help doing anything to it im leicester based so could probably offer you a hand (for free)

Hey Mattie that sounds brilliant, thanks.
I still haven't put in an offer, and yes it is in a bit of a sorry state bodywork-wise, and needs at least part of an exhaust (back box, maybe more), but one of the appeals is that it's only done 73K miles: because I don't do many miles myself, if I do get a low-ish mileage example it stays low, but my few miles on top of a bigger mileage is less significant.
Well thats the theory, maybe it's more of a theory than anything significant or realistic, but everyone has their own irrational ideas Laughing

Anyway, I shall hopefully have a test drive tomorrow and see where it goes from there!

In the meantime, if anyone has any pointers about the 206-specific things to look out for it could be a good bargaining tool. And even if I don't go for this one, there may be one just round the corner that beckons....

What He Said mates car had faulty one, no eml light but made emissions sky high.
