I have a 206GT with play in th rear arm bearing. Just wondering if it's easy to replace the bearings or would it be better to just swap the axle?

Swop the axle, once you notice the rear beam bearings need replacing it normally means the axle is knackered internally anyway.

i cant see how this advice as any good ? the bearings are meant to wear out before the beam? if ever one of us changes the beam they will be rare as rocking horse s**t ive only been on here a couple of months an since ive been on here ive seen at least 15 people who have been told to change the beams well thats 30 less 206 beams in the world! there has got to be another way?

you can try and replace them but as said water gets into the shaft and eats away which nackers the shaft meaning that replacing the bearing is no good, also its a hard job to get the rear arm off when on the car, there are companies that sell re-conditioned ones and if you can afford it this is definatly the way to go, as getting one form the breakers can be pot luck!

you can buy new beam shafts and new bearings so how is replacing these worse then getting another used beam which could have the same problem?

True, that getting another beam and scrapping your old one is silly. Mine was worn out and failed MOT
Sent it of to have new stub axles pressed in and then rebuilt it myself using new peugeot bearings. Total cost is around £300 all in.
Most refurbishers will do the whole job for you but i'd already stripped it down and bought the pug bearings and seals so didn't want to waste the £90

the main reason for replace the whole axle for myself was cost, you can get a complete one for £120, yes you got to strip it down etc to put it back on your car but my car simply doesnt warrent spedning £300 on it i think you can by a complete refurbed beam for £350.

I'm wondering for the relatively small cost of changing the bearings on a decent axle will this prolong its life?
It doesn't loook to be that hard to change the bearings.

Changing the Bearings isn't a difficult job, a bit fiddly if you've got ham hands but it can be done.

I like to think I'm capable...would be a good opportunity to refurb everything attached to the axle too...
But does the saying 'if it aint broke don't fix it' apply?

It can do, although "prevention is better than cure" 
I prefer to do preventative maintanence than reactive repairs where possible.

I got the old yellow slip from MOT yesterday about rear offside bearing, so this is my years project to get this sorted, i was thinking used rear axle with lower miles, but then i thought about a new bearing etc, i can see that the cost of a used beam is lower than the cost of the bearing, unless you DIY it which i would if i had time :D.
So just thinking about what to do, obviously a new bearing would/should feel better, is it a good idea to reaplace both sides while im at it, be like reconditioned internals as apposed to half fixed or a used beam.
When replacing a bearing, what else do i need in mine, broken parts clear out aswel as the shafts and ends being worn?

the thing is with these rear axles is that for one person it may be an extra £150 - 200 for all the kit to re build an axle but for the dozens are people that are just swapping them and maybe getting 5000 miles before there 2nd hand axle does the same thing is going down the exact same road as the 205 gti. pug axles are s**t we know that but for everyone who scraps there slightly worn axle because they cant be arsed to fork out for a proper job on it is another axle which in the future could be needed. 205 axles are like rocking horse s**t now and are fetching £400-500 for a decent one. yeah there are alot of 206's about but already we are getting to this problem , i belive someone said he has at least 12 people waiting for him to get axles in the other day?! this is madness even if you axle is so worn there is alot of play in it, its still not the end of the world you can buy every part for an axle to make it virtually brand new again and the only way i would suggest replacing the whole axle is if its rusted and beond repair

Well it passed the mot with it, and they said its not that bad, i just sold a 206 axle aswel, not sure they are become rare, its just the gti ones people can't seem to get hold of really.
But im just going to look online at part prices and have a look at doing it mysel, i heard the noise about 3months ago and thought it was my front boot, but i'll get this sorted
