can anyone recommend a fault code reader just for general use with a x reg 206 gti.

just wondering if its cheaper to buy one in the long run, depending on prices or keep going to garages and pay their prices each time.

cheers for any help

A x-reg might not be EOBD, its trial and error.

My Y-reg isn't

01 for petrols, 04 for dervs in europe.

My mates 00 petrol didn't work with the cheap EOBD code reader, and when I say cheap I paid £70 Laughing

so with mine being an x reg would i be looking at a eobd or obdll. sorry but not really got a clue and thought it may be better to buy one rather than pay £40 or so to have the codes read.

EOBD is the European equivalent of OBDII, European On-Board Diagnostics. They use the same 16 pin connector.

Well tbh, the pug only uses 4 or 5 pins due to the protocol.

It's hit and miss, like I said.

It will have the 16pin OBD port in the fusebox, but that doesn't mean it is EOBD Wink

It might not be using the ISO 9141 - 2 protocol, it might use the old J1850 which a eobd reader wont read

cheers lee. going to be honest i will try and do a bit of internet research but its all getting confusing already, though it would be a simple plug and read then post the codes up for more help.

Depending on what type it is, hopefully CD-VRS can help with that, where is a good place to get one.

it might be best to get a garage to do it at this rate though and hope i dont get many more in the future!!!.

it one problem after another now, just serviced it, started it up today after putting on a new breather pipe and i've got white smoke coming out the exhaust.....getting well annoyed with this car!!

The OBDII scanner I have came with a instruction book that has details on what the codes are also.
I'll ask the guy that I'm borrowing it from where he got it.

I'm off home shortly, PM me & I won't forget.
