Hi
i'm posting this on behalf of a friend. she has a 2003 1.6 206cc
The problem is, if she was to drive from one place to another without any stoping and starting it would be fine.
However in stop start traffic (morning on way to work) the temp shoots up so far that it causes the warning to come on and 'STOP' flashes on the dash - this then disapears when she gets out of the stop start traffic...
any ideas?

Something similar happens to me. I've never had it to go up to the top though ''/ Normally, I'm out of the traffic before then.
Something to do when it happens is turn the heaters, direct them to the windows and open the windows. Should act like a release valve.
Honestly, I have no idea why it happens though. I've had the temperature sensor changed, thermostat changed, and still no luck!
I'd be interested in what anyone else has to say, too.
Does the fan come on at all?

Flick the A/C on if she has it, in the short term. She should see if the fans kicking in...might be a relay/fuse?

Thereabouts or just slightly over  Mine kicks in at about 93ish.. All cars are never the same though

so what does it mean if fan DOESN'T come on? that the temp reading is incorrect and the problem is something else?

if the car has air conditioning the chances are the two relays next to the radiator are corroided or cream crackered. the relay make the fan work at different times even in traffic a car should never overheat your friend should be careful not to damage the head gasket

Fan or thermostat probably.
Mine is the same and after the coilpack is sorted i wil look into these too.

i remeber when i bought mine it overheated so to check the fan works i bridge the plug from the temp sensor with the ignition on and the fan worked

there is a resister in the radiator bottom left hand looking at it from the front threw the grill ( 2 or 3 pins)
this is a common problem that people dont know about.
change it its about £8 for pug
