ok had a hectic morning first my blackberry curve stopped bloomin working. then i was dropping the kids off at school and i put the handbrake on and something popped and now its near enough vertical lol, is it just a case of tightening it up?
also the car struggled to start up like a flat battery would give. then it fired up and when i was waiting in traffic the revs went up and down and it wouldn't hold its revs and kept cutting out. so ive been to my local battery dealer and he tested it and it came up a red light and it needs changing does this sound right?
if so my cars a 2.0lt gti 2001 W reg how do i change it or is it just a straight forward change

Most likely one of the handbrake cables has snapped OR its come undo under the lever.
Check the rear brakes are in good working order & make sure none of the pads have lost there friction material.

Does the handbrake still hold the car stationary when it is in this position?
MrBSI is spot on when he says it sounds like something has snapped, that was my first thought, but from reading what you put it sounds as if the handbrake is still working, just moving further. A bit unclear at the moment.

yeah sorry the handbrake can still be applied just pulls right up. also my rear pads need replacing.
Edit the cars a 2000 reg

Might just need tightening up, open up the plastic bit behind the handbrake, you need a torx screwdriver fro this, and then tighten up the nut!

The OP has already said the rear pads need replacing, pointless messing with the cable until the pads are replaced.
Most likely find with new pads fitted the cable doesnt need adjsuting.

The shoe might have broken, happened to me a couple of months back
Edit: nevermind, just saw it was a gti and they dont have shoes do they? lol

lol yeah rear disks n pads on this one mate.
ok ive just took the trim off to look at the handbrake and i was sitting in the back as you look at the handbrake the cable on the right is slack when the handbrake is engaged, however the cable on the left is sound.

See if the cable on the right is still attached at the other end would be a good start

The cable should be attached to the lever on the rear brake caliper.
Have a look on the left hand side first as that seems to still be working.

both cables are still their mate. as you look at them from the rear seats the left one is tight when the handbrake is engaged the right one is loose but they are both their with the metal things still attached to the end of the cables that grip the handbrake
