my mate had this problem after he red lined his car too much...
can't give you specifics, but it was an engine fault, and his car had the same problems you are describing.
your exhaust sound might be whats reflecting this.

was this a completely random break down?

Have a look underneath for any major cracks in the exhaust, particularly around the joints.

car smells fine, and yeah it was a completely random, halfway down mototrway. car never gets redlined.

do you think the exhaust could be causing the lack of power and juderry-ness?

If the exhaust is sounding off it is the best place to start, most exhaust places will have a look around and show you any crack, holes or worse for free. Have you noticed the car sounding....well nicer?! lol. In that has it sounded any different, more throaty/sporty. When holes or cracks develop this normally happens and then it goes from a nice sound to a bloody awful sound very quickly and messes with the revs and engine idle as the hole get bigger.

Get that checked first and post back, peeps on hear will then be able to advice better if thats ruled out

**EDIT** Make sure that the pipes that go into and out of the centre box are checked with a few revs on. I had quite a big crack at the join which was missed twice at two different garages because at idle it didn't leak
