Hi,
My son has recently bought a 206 HDI 1.4 8v, and the engine seems down on power, it will only rev to 3,200rpm max in neutral with the pedal flat to the floor, definately feels like an electronic limit as the revs just hit a wall and will not increase at all. just before this the engine goes flat.
There are no warning lights showing, I`ve unplugged the MAF sensor and it`s a bit worse. the car has recently had an engine service prior to purchase.

At the moment it`s slower than his 1.9 non turbo Polo he`s replacing.
Any ideas?

get it code read and see what that throws out, its doing it for some safety reason, whatever it may be

Its in limp mode, normally two or more major sensors are detecting problems or failures. Needs code reading

Thanks for your prompt answer, is there anyone in the Cambridgeshire area that can fault code read, as Sheffield is a bit too far.

There is an intermittent beeping sound but no warning lights, I have noticed that there is a screw in sensor at the top of the radiator that appears to be broke but can`t find anyleads that might have plugged into it

What year is the 206 in question as from 2004 diesel's had to be EOBD Wink

Hi, it`s on a 53 plate but registered 2004, so it would have been registered in jan or feb 2004 so probably a 2003 model.

You may get lucky with a cheap EOBD scanner, most mechanics / small garages will have one, you will most likely know someone family / friends who has one.

16 pin diagnostic socket is behind the dash flap to the right of the drivers knee, turn the plastic screw with a coin & then lift / unclip the flap.

Ive just tried to start the car and now all I get is a electrical whirring noise from the starter motor, i`ve given it a whack with a hammer to try and free the bendix to no avail any ideas, before I try and remove the most inaccessible starter motor I`ve ever come across.

I had to do one Other day on my van that involved removing load of stuff to get to it Laughing


Check the starter earth cables etc

And batt is fully charged.

tHE STARTER MOTOR SPINS UP THERE IS NO CLICKING AS THE SOLENOID WOULD HAVE GONE THE STARTER IS ACTUALLY WORKING JUST NOT ENGAGEING IT CAN BE THROWING THE BENDIX OUT TO ENGAGE THE TEETH ON THE FLYWHEEL.

Turn your caps lock off Wink

Bendix? ? ?

Starts like the starter is turning but the solenoid isn't firing the pinion gear out to engage with the flywheel ring gear.

Thanks for the help I`ve fitted a new starter £100 and it starts fine now, must of been on it`s way out the last couple of days as it spins up and starts quicker now.

It has the older 16 pin trapiziod shaped plug by the fuse box, same as the one I have for my vw`s,
for the fault codes.

Are theses code reader on ebay for around £20 any good, will they wipe any fault codes or just tell me what they are?
