They are ok IF your car is EOBD, your car is right on the cross over point where it had to be legally EOBD compatible.
The cheaper ones normally only read powertrain codes & allow you to erase them, put the light out.
I RECKON it will work, i've managed to use an EOBD reader on a W reg 306 HDI before

BROKE DOWN AGAIN TODAY, THE CAR STARTED, THE CUT OUTAND THE STARTER KEPT SPINNING EVEN WITH THE IGNITION KEY REMOVED, FOLLOWED BY ALL THE ELECTRICS HAVING A FIT,UNTIL THE BATTERY WAS DISCONNECTED, IT`S BEING RECOVERED TO A GARAGE AND GOT RIDE OFF WHAT A PILE OF FRENCH s**te, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR SO IT`S BACK TO VW`S
