Why do i get flawed by the most simplest of things?!

Basically, went to change my orginal gearknob and as i was pulling it the gear lever popped up. it went back in ok and worked fine after testing, but not being mechanically minded, i do not know whether or not this is expected or whether it is safe to continue pulling the gearknob?

frankly, the last thing i want is to sacrifice my gearbox just for the sake of some interior vanity.

Any help is much appreciated.
Cheers

Not quite sure what you're asking, changing a gearknob is just grab, twist and pull. I doubt you can do any damage to the gearbox just by pulling the gearknob off
