alright folks looking for abit of advice!!!
when going into 3rd sometimes 4th the gears grinde drives fine but rather annoying!!!
anyone got any ideas what it could be??
the car is a 51 plate gti

the gear box's are known to be crappy in comparison to fords etc, have you tried letting it sit in neutral for just a split second before changing to the other gear instead of going straight in, that might stop it  does in mine lol
could be the gearbox on its way out...

yeah sometimes is ok when i leave it for a split second and put it in, mostly 3rd gear thought it might be a linkage or something i dunno!!!
seems to drive fine when in gears so don"t think it is gear box (i hope)

Probably just worn synchros. The gearbox doesn't even need to be removed to fix these...if you know what you're doing!

I think my second gear synchro is dying. I get a horrible crunch if I'm high in the revs changing from first, thats why I'm planning on changing my gearbox oil, to hopefully alleviate the problem for a while.
never have a problem changing down because rev matching is second nature after my blip down VTEC days

My gears used to grind from 3rd to 4th when I had a Peugeot 106 and I cured it by simply changing the gearbox oil.
The oil doesn't last forever so becomes ineffective after the recommended service interval change - not sure exactly how many miles off hand.
It's a very cheap fix and even if it isn't this that's the problem it's always good to have fresh oil to prolong the gearbox life.
Very easy to change as well and there are tutorials on this site.
My Peugeot 206 has never crunched gears when changing but I put new oil in to prevent it doing so when I bought it.
