iirc correctly when i priced up a trip i found a really good ring hotel with decent reviews etc etc, the perfect place to stay and it was something ridiculous like £37 a night for a twin room.. its not going to be £100 a night each..

£500 over 6 days? 5 nights b&b in hotels will swallow that. Plus ~1000 miles of fuel (£300) then food, beer etc etc. The £2k figure would contain the contingency for if/when something goes hideously wrong. To just do the trip £1000 looks like a go'er but personally i like to have enough to get me out of the sh*t. It's fine saying i have EU breakdown but how happy will you be if you get to callais, breakdown and they take you home. |
You've really not done any research into this have you? You clearly know more than those who've been so we'll leave you to it. |
If your happy to sleep in a cheap hotel and eat crap for a few days, jog on with your £500. I'm saying if i were to do it (but i forgot opinions aren't always welcome here) then i would be making sure i had access to £2k. A grand of which would be an emergency pot. A bit like sensible 'grown ups' would have so they don't have to ruin a good trip by breaking down and getting towed home because they dont have the money to fix the car. But obviously you needed to have taken a risk and got away with it for your opinion to count and definately not thought through a few more scenarios than 'ah it will be alright...'
As for the 'negative comment', it's not negativity it's past experience of being stuck in a foreign country. luckily with enough cash available to get out (the Volcano incident) |
I didn't say it was a negative comment.
We stay in a decent hotel, with a good breakfast and evening meal, wifi, bar, workshop facilities on site, garages for your car / parts and less than 20metres from an entry point onto the 'Ring. I can walk out of my door and be 'Ring side in under 10 seconds. I.e the the hotel you see from the track when going around it in real life / on your games console... But of course, you've done your research and it must be a crap hotel. So... Jog on and look into it all properly, and then come back with something useful.
You fail to realise that when you're there, you're surrounded by petrolheads (local and tourists) who will happily go out of their way to help you should anything happen. We wandered around looking for cars to hire to go round the track with (just as an option) and there were people lending jacks and whatnot to passers by who needed a hand, repairs on peoples car parks were welcomed and the atmosphere there is like no other.
We had contingencies, personally I had more than 4 times the money you're talking about, just as contingency alone, big deal. It would have never have been required for breakdowns. Which is why I say it can be done for £500 if someone wants to be froogle. You're supposed to be going with friends, who will help. I'm going in 2 weeks, if one of us breaks down, the others help out to get them fixed / home. It's the commaderie that makes the trip, not how much money you need to take. If you'd been, or even really looked into it, you'd see this. People who want to go, but can't afford the ridiculous figures you're throwing around, shouldn't be put off as it really can be done on a shoe string. You seem more obsessed with breaking down than actually going to enjoy the trip.
