6 weeks into owning my lovely Pug, I have had so many problems with it and now I'm told that the head gasket is on its way out (oil mixing with water etc etc)
To paint you a picture - I've been onto Trading Standards to see whether I have a leg to stand on with the trader that sold me the car as I've had it a matter of weeks. It appears I havent as I've purchased an older car and we should expect such problems to happen...So..it looks like i'm going to have the bite the bullet and pay for head gasket.
A colleague has told me DONT DO IT - purely because it could go wrong again within a matter of months. I cant afford to keep getting it done. The car is lovely (see pic in signature - click on link) but it's not worth £1000's. So I really need some help. Is it worth it? Can it go wrong? Is there anything I could do to protect myself (ie guarantee on part or does it not work like that?)
Really appreciate any advice you can give.
PS - the car runs wonderfully well. Looks nice and ideally i dont want to get shot. Its done 81,000 miles.

head gasket is about 250 quid! Unfortunately, if it was repaired ,something else could go wrong! Its the nature of owning a car!

If the repair is done by a reputable repairer there's no reason it should go wrong again 'within a matter of months', as long as they establish & if neccessery rectify what caused it to fail in the first place.

yes get it done, if you have a head skimmed at the same time, there's no reason why it should go in a matter of months, it should be fine for years.
The main reason why gaskets go after months is because the heads been warped from the orig gasket going and not skimmed when the new ones been fitted.
if you like the car get it done..

my head gasket has been on the way out ever since i bought lil p in 08 lol i got a quote for it and it was like £450 so i left it n she is still going strong but i have just bought a head gasket and my bf n his dad are gonna change it for me with out skimming the head before it epically goes! they gonna do a service at the same time on it too as it hasnt been serviced either since i bought it lol
what a neglectful owner i am  x

Love it! Could do...
Unfortunately it looks like it has to be done..and I should ensure it's done properly. The plot thickens as the mechanic that is going to do this is a "friend" of the trader. The trader has agreed for me to pay £200 and he will cover the rest. Long story involving warranty issues.....
Not as straight forward as it looks really

if its been going for over 3 years the heads probably warped  pays to get the head skimmed or it will go again, also dont forget you need new bolts because they stretch and cannot be used again

If your changing the head gasket you should also budget for / fit a timing belt kit.

All done and dusted. £450 - new head gasket, new cam belt. It appears it had a slight split on the head hence the water and the oil mixing together. Fingers crossed that I'll have no problems for a few months
