Hi guys,
The other day i had my head gasket, water pump and cam belt changed by peugeot and since then ive had a strange whining noise coming from somewhere in the engine bay! Its apparent at idle and gets higher pitched as the revs increase and lower as they decrease. Really doing my nut in! Any ideas? Joni

(Edit, its a 1999 206 1.4 LX.)

Take it back into them and ask them to listen. Might be the waterpump bearing, or a belt been over tightened. It will still be under warranty from them so get them to sort it FOC

I would say take it back to Peugeot, I think 99.9% of everyone else will also. If it wasn't there when they started the work it's something they have done or haven't done which is causing it. Their work should come with a guarantee of some sort. Until then just pretend it's a turbo whistle Wink

take it back or if you can take the aux belt of and start it up for 10seconds or so, if the noise is still there without the aux belt you know its somthing to do with the cambelt. if not its the alternator side so it could be a roller or tentioner or even the alternator itself

The whine is definately caused by an overtensioned timing belt, get it correctly re-tensioned asap.
1.4 hdi, 206, Year..2003, 100,000 miles

I would assume it's a pulley that's not too happy somewhere.

Hi, I have the same issue at the moment and I've just been out and taken the belt off and it dissappeared. I'm pretty sure it's my automatic pulley. Not 100% but above comments reinforce that it's probably tensioned with bolts and that yours has been overtightened. Take it back to pug asap becuase if it's too tight then it could damage the bearings in alternator. Doesn't mean that your tensioner is on it's way out yet but could be because its just too tight.

Just an update, the whining noise is still going strong. i took it back to peugeot and they told me that they dont remove the auxillary belt when doing the headgasket,water pump and cam belt. So are denying its anything to do with them! Even though the noise wasnt there before! They had a look and said its a bearing on the pulley directly below the P/steering pump and want 157 quid to fix it! He said there's no way i can prove it was them and there's no way they can prove it wasnt so was happy to offer me a 15% discount as a good will gesture..haha My a*se! So my questions are....Does the auxillary belt actually have to come off for the HG job and what will happen if i leave the pulley bearing for a bit? Im broke at the mo! Cheers Joni

Just like edward has said it does need to be removed to get the bottom pully off to get cambelt off, the whinning noise is usally over tighten belt but could be that they only changed the cambelt itself and refitted the old tensioner and guides and then this can all so cause the whinning noise due to a new cambelt putting alot stress on old components ( tensioner / guides )

but it does need to be sorted out.

get onto your local trading standards. either you have paid for a job to be done and they haven't done it, namely the cambelt, or they have bodged the job and the fact that they said they didn't remove the aux belt when they have no option but to do it will go massively in your favour.
Without having an engine in front of me and working from memory, i would have said that the aux belt runs on the crankshaft pully which is located outside the timing belt cover, therefore making it impossible to remove the timing belt without removing the aux belt or cutting the timing belt itself. Obviously the latter would make it difficult to refit a new belt as this too would need to be cut.
