Possible flat battery and BSI frying !!

Hi everyone, Im away fighting the war on terrorism at the moment and when I return to good 'ol Blighty in a couple of weeks Im expecting my battery to be flat. After reading so much about "frying" BSI's etc, Im wondering if its possible to "jump start" my 2003 1.4 GLX just like you would any other car, or is there a risk of doing some damage to the BSI ?. Any advice would be most welcome as the last thing I want is a knackered car and a desperate girlfriend in the middle of the night, if you catch my drift !! Wink

War on terrorism or the war on Islam and oil?

Try to bump start it rather than use jump leads. If you need to use jump leads then turn the side lights on to try and absorb any spiking.

Now there's a thing MrBSI, Ive read so much about disconnecting the battery as well, open drivers window, disconnect battery, stand on 1 leg for 3 mins, re-connect, turn ignition on etc etc, why cant pugs just be like any other bloody car? If Id done as Ive read about diconnecting the battery the drivers window would of been open for 2 months.

As for the battery charger Copey, not a chance, its parked in the middle of a massive car park at least 250 metres away from the nearest building on a military base !!!

soft booting the bsi is just a precaution not a necessity, at the end of the day its worth takin a few extra minutes when doin things so you don't cause any unnecessary problems for yourself.

Its due to the sensitivity of the BSI. Its because as soon as you unlock the car it wakes up. It's like you on your PC and someone rips the plug out of the socket, you're defiantly going to lose some things and it might corrupt the PC

When you attempt start it, turn all unnecessary electrics off, then turn it to the ignition and back off a couple of times to let the fuel pump, pump some fuel around the engine, sometimes eases starting.

You should really Seabook, just helps prevent spiking

If it was that simple, they would include a suitable resistor in the BSi/ECU itself, which is then taken out of circuit after power-up from cold.

We could go into this to some depth, but the sort of near-instantaneous
spike caused at so many KV is impossible to catch (arrest) even with a lot
of active components etc. let alone a couple of resistors (lamps).

Speaking of which I need to get a 22k resistor and a 1n4007 diode for a bmw seat

I used to jump start mine regularly (I was always taking it apart and rebuilding it so it spent alot of time with a flat battery) and never had any problems.
