I had this after leaving my car for a while. Cant really diagnose it as the problem went away after I changed the engine :S
But most likely are the above suggestions. Door seals or heater matrix.

I had the same today apart from it was in the drivers footwell... Tried to find it but couldn't but i'm not sure if the sheeting behind the doorcard has been removed or not.

Yes it's there to keep the water that inevitably bypasses the window seals inside the door where it should then drain out of the bottom of the door.
I had this problem on a rear and drivers door and found the foam membrane was damaged and had become detached around the edges. I repaired it with builders silicone and it completely cured the problem.
With the door open wide and with the window closed pour water as fast as a watering can will allow along the outer window seal at the base of the window, if the membrane is at fault you should see water leaking on the inside of the door from behind the door card. It will also pour out from the bottom of the door but thats OK.

Sounds silly but Smell the water, if it's heater matrix you will smell the anti freeze, how I worked mine out anyway.
My mate went as far as tasting it Lol

I've found water in both my footwells before (on separate occasions). Couldn't find the source of the leak but the sills had slight puddles in them as well, so guessing it was from the door somehow
