Hello chaps,
After the demise of my gf's 1.1 we're now looking at a 1.4 HDi. To be honest I was pretty disappointed with the 1.1 - okay I wasn't expecting mega power but the mpg was pretty dire since my VTS averages the same (42 mpg). We've, well, I've done the calcs and we should be saving around £700 per year going to 1.4 HDi. Now I've had experience of the C3 1.4 HDi ages and ages ago and I have to say I was a big fan of the engine, I could get 80 mpg without much issue, it was rediculously good on fuel. But I've never encountered the 206 in 1.4 HDi guise. I assume the economy will be the same but if there are any owners out there I'd love to hear you thoughts and experiences with the car, positive and negative, in particular high mileages ones (>100,000).
I'm trying to envisage any major problems that might arise during ownership (minor ones I'm not worried about but as the C3 HDi never failed on me I'm not sure what to expect to fail spectacularly as the mileage increases).
My concerns are rear beam, HG and turbo - since they're either pigs to source affordably or beyond my mechanical prowess.
Is there any other issues I should be aware of and put money aside for?

you can never get 80mpg on a 1.4 hdi
1.4 HDi is more or less the same power as the 1.1
turbo should be reliable as long as oil is changed regularly and it's good quality
HG normally is not an issue on most HDi in 206
axle is a P** but you can always change the bearing first

I don't want this thread to focus on my amazing mpg skills but trust me you can, I got 90 mpg out of a 1.5D and 55 mpg out of a 1.6 16v (saxos),. Pump up the tyres, remove the junk, drive at 55 mph for 6 hours on a motorway and try not to fall asleep, mind you lorry drivers passing you on the right waving their hands with their thumb and index finger touching and beeping their horns means it's never too boring.
1.1 was 60 hp I think
1.4 HDi is 70 hp (again I think).
No worries with the oil - it's the first thing I change when I buy a car, Millers XFD okay? I've changed the beam before it's just a pain in the backside trying to source one in good knick - there's no difference between say 1.1's and HDi beams though is there? Something is telling me it's discs on the rear with the HDi's.
Good stuff on the HG.

I'd rather have some fun in a car than be bored shitless doing 55mph.
Use Total Quartz 7000 10w40 oil
Axles are the same. If you have ABS, it needs to match the one for your electrical system.

I totally agree - but the £35 tax, uber cheap running costs and lower insurance are much more GF friendly

B****r - different electrical systems?! Oh boy. Is there an 'Introduction to 206 electrics for beginners' thread on this site? Sounds like a pain if it comes to beam replacement

oil grade is more important (thickness). and more important is the previous owner also do the same
no engine flush, good oil filter.
mind you few of the 2.0HDi owners has their turbo failed under 100K.
about the beam all 206 use the same beam apart from SW and 180GTi.
you can get whatever beam you want and then swap your existing trailing arm onto it.
if you mean the whole axle then it depends on disc/ drum, abs/ non-abs and also plexed/ preplexed(only matter if you have abs)

in fairness, i reckon it's extremely easy to achieve 70MPG+ in a 1.4hdi without driving like a granny. i have a friend who bought the ford fiesta version lately and got close to 80mpg on a long drive to silverstone.
the 1.4 hdi comes in 68bhp and 70bhp versions (same really) and has loads of flat spots. however, it has way, way more torque than the 1.1 and this makes it streets ahead in my opinion (my mrs had a c2 1.1 which is basically the same angine and it was pathetic).
my mrs averages 65MPG according to the trip but i calculated it to be about 68mpg and she is a nutter behind the wheel. it is remapped but the use of the extra power cancels out any economy increase!
i prefer the gearbox of a 2.0hdi however the 1.4 is statistically the most economocal of the hdi engines.

i like my 1.4 a lot but wish id gone for the 2.0 after driving toms, however i have decatted, put in a performance air filter and plan on installing an intercooler, at the minute it is by no means slow but its really all about how you drive it
i let my mate have a go on private ground and it look him ages to get upto speed whereas it looks me much less time lol
the mpg is decent but not as good as it used to be but that isnt hugely important to me, its the acceleration i like! my average mpg is 42 i think atm

How much are you looking to spend by the way; I will be selling my 1.4HDi very soon as I now have a Ford Focus Titanium TDCi as a company car and no-longer need the 206!
