Well where do I start, I've got a 2004 206 gti 180 and ever since having the timing belt done I am experiencing problem after problem it ran great before that, we only had timing belt done as we'd hit the 65k mark. it's cost me in excess of 2k already and it's still not fixed. We had our timing belt done at a local garage and although the car drove fine after there was a lot of noise coming from the belt itself. We took it back and we were told it was fine. We decided to take it to peugeot main dealer and we were advised that the casing had not been fitted correctly. They also retimed it. As soon as we drove out of peugeot the car seemed to lack power. We contacted peugeot again and they told us that it's because we needed a dampner fitting in order for them to fully guarantee that the timing would be correct. So we paid for that. The car still lacked power, they took it in and eventually after 4 days they found one of the locking pins from the timing belt in with the camshafts!!!! We got the car back and although better it still didn't feel right. We then took it to another garage who our family has always used and they discovered the gasket had gone as after it had come out of peugeot we had problems with cooling temperature and white substance in the oil. The gasket has been replaced and also the head has been skimmed. Car has been running alright however there was a tapping noise coming from the engine, it is booked in to have the tappits replaced. Driving home tonight the engine coolant level has gone through the roof and the warning light has been flashing constantly. What I would like to know is what could this be and also could it be related to peugeot leaving the locking pin in with cams? If this isn't solved soon the car is going to have to go as can't afford all the repairs I've spent 3k on it already!!!

wow iv had a problem free 2 years with mine....... sound like you just need to buy mine and sell yours ( realy bad sales pitch haha) on a serious note i would say take it back to peugeot mate and fill them in

Did you establish when you fixed the head gasket what caused it in the first place? A lot of people just fix the head and dont check what caused it to overheat in the first place

Could be a radiator, blocked coolant pipe. Was this checked before the repairs?

When u change a cambelt you should also change the water pump this failing could of coursed you head gasket to fail.

so rare to hear problems with the 180 engine! Its not very often its a pain in the a**e.. hope it all gets sorted and you get to enjoy the car again

Hi all, tell me about it, nothing but bad luck. We did have the water pump replaced when the timing belt was done. Just a heads up when i checked the engine after the warning light all the back half of the engine was absolutley red hot but the exhaust and everything was lukewarm. When we took the cap off the water it was literally boiling over. When we had the head gasket done the mechanic had the car 5 weeks!!!! They couldn't work out what the problem was as all compression tests were fine. Hence why the changed the gasket and had the head skimmed! Totally at a loss of what to do! Knew I should have bought a Honda Civic Type R! Now got to organise getting it towed 30 miles back to the garage that did the head gasket as Peugeot keep denying that they have anything to do with the problems!! Arrrrgggghhhh!

Are the coolant levels correct??

Dont you replace the coolant when the water pump is taken off?

Its just a long shot, im no expert.

EDIT: just managed to read through what you had put, "only had the belt done".

Sorry I'm female so not very technical when replying lol! Coolant level is fine, don't seem to have lost any water or coolant at all. When we had the timing belt done the water pump was replaced 100% and as far as I'm aware the coolant has been changed also. The engine itself isn't overheating its just the coolant. The water is literally boiling in the tank. Last night when it happened all around where the coolant bottle is was red hot, yet the engine head, cat and everything else was quite cool. I'd only had the car running for 5 minutes when it happened. Could it be the coolant thermostat. Oh and I've also noted fresh oil drips underneath however the oil level is halfway between full and empty.

oh and when i said we only had the timing belt done as we had hit the 65k mark I meant it wasn't done because it needed doing we just thought it was best to get it done because of the mileage. Before having the belt done the car ran great no problems what so ever other than general wear and tear. Don't know if it's relevant but we've also had a full sports cat and stainless steel exhaust fitted also.

If the exhaust was lukewarm you must have let it cool for a few minutes. As soon as you switch the engine on the manifold and front part of the system becomes hot very quickly. It also cools down quickly because they are made of such light material.

The engine block takes a little longer to heat up but retains its heat longer - even 4 hours after the engine has been switched off it can retain some heat.

The cooling system is sealed and pressurised. As soon as you take the cap off after a run the pressure is suddenly released and so it will appear to be boiling over.

Hi Edward thanks for the advice, we had the aa come and tow it to our garage. The coolant is literally boiling within 2 minutes of the car starting and the warning light is coming on and therefore this isn't normal. It's now in the garage and both the mechanic and the aa believe it is the thermostat that is at fault we also have oil drips. I will let you all know the outcome from the garage. Thanks for all the advice guys x
