What am i looking at doing if my rear Axle needs replacing because of a nackered bearing on one side ? Am i best reconditioning or scrappy ? Plus what kind of labour is involved my MOts months away but will it need doing ASAP ? (206 GTI)

Well it looks a real pig of a job and ive only got axle stands, what is the rear axle attached 2 ?

Bolted on to the body shell via 4 mounts.
Remember to disconnect the handbrake cables, abs sensors connectors & hydraulic brake pipes if your dropping the complete unit.

OK cheers just the right tools and plugging those brake pipes, Is there any risk of my wheels falling off if its worn on one side on the bearing and there's a little bit of play ? I can hear a clonking noise at low speeds... Just my MOT is ages away !!

You normally need torx sockets for the axle mount bolts.
I would take it steady until its fixed, the wheel wont come of but the trailing arm will be a little loose, dont leave replacing the bearings to long as they will start to chew in to the rear beam & then you end up needing to spend more money fixing it OR even replacing the complete rear axle!

Maybe i could just replace the 1 Bearing as a temp Fix is it tricky ? least it would stop wearing the axle on that side...

I did a few hundred miles and 2 trackdays with no bearing left in either side. I wouldn't worry mate. Nothing going to fall off

Yeah bloody annoying noise though and plus my tyres are unevenly wearing its only for the MOT really tbh which is 5 Months away...

Well there selling the repair kit on ebay now, think it's £50 a side. However i got mine done by a guy off here, but i bought another rear axle, had that overhauled with new ...everything, then fitted. cost a fortune but at least i know its pukka.

I bought an axle from eBay for £200 and labour was £150 to have it fitted

Hours job to replace the bearing in the axel, rather do it than the whole axel and its cheaper and the kit was only be 40 quid

Yeah its just up Halfords they said the pins were wearing the Axel itself so maybe beyond repair ?

Careful buying replacement axles or trying to replace the bearings in yours as the shaft that the axle 'bushes' (actually bearings) fits on is usually damaged when the old bearing fails. So even if you put new bearings on it they will fail pretty quickly
