I've recently got 170 miles out of half a tank town driving only, so that is about 31mpg
I tend to change gear at 2.5 - 3k, no engine mods
I am wondering if this is good for a 1.4 8v, and interested to know what everyone else seems to average

The problem is you can't measure it on the gauge. It's so far off it's unbelievable.
You can only really measure by how many miles you do then filling up and calculating it from how much you put back in the tank.
In the GTi I could get to 200 on half a tank but then it would flick the light on at 330... (£65)

I've been using Fuelly which you update with the miles on the clock every time you fuel up, how much you fuel up by etc seems to average around 30mpg

I have drove to silverstone and back, let idle for about 1 and half on full tilt with the sound system (so revs dipping etc)
And still have quater and an 1/8th left over
(1.4, lots of weight, decat, back box, 1.6 inlet)

My 1.4 is terrible, £30 strugles to get 200 miles, and thats after that fuel lights been on for the last 20 and im right down the bottom of the reserve on the gauge. The trouble with the 1.4s is it doesnt have the power for the weight of the car in the same respect yours does. So in the same day to day town driving with a steady right foot yours will do the same if not more miles to the gallon as its not being worked like the 1.4 is.

Dash comp says I get about 47 so not to far off, that's city driving and country driving no motorways

Yer it's why I want to go up an engine size. For the crap MPG it really doesnt justify the running costs/lack of power. Thanks mate
