it was on by the way, is there something about the ESP i do not know about ?

How come?
Unless your on a track OR the car is stuck in the snow & your trying to dig it out I see no reason why the ESP needs to be switched off.

Only time mine is switched off constantly.
Although I sometimes turn it off if I'm at a really busy junction and need to set off quickly.

Does ESP slow cars down getting off from junctions?
Seems odd to turn off ESP, seeing as its a safety feature!

its mainly the traction control he's removing as the TC dulls the power to stop the wheels spinning

Only time I turn mine off is the 0-60 runs.

I thought traction control regulated the brakes?

When accelerating fast it controls the throttle too, thus dulling the power
Think it also applies brakes but that's when loosing control

ESP reduces torque to control wheelspin [from a standing start], ABS isn't affected by it as far as I know

it only reduces torque [lowering rev limit] - it can't 'control' the throttle or brakes [that's the driver's job]

Why carnt it?
The ECU controls the throttle body so it can open and close when it likes, when my ESP kicks it it doesn't lower the rev limit, you can feel it adjusting how much throttle
