No harm in doing it early, especially if it cures your problem. Clean the TB too.

Check the coilpack back when i had my 106 it hesitated alot, in the end it was the coilpack.
Also 40 in 5th is fine as i have the same engine and it pulls fine even like that (granted it doesn't like it too much untill it starts accelerating but then again my car doesn't like sitting in 3rd at 20), and to those saying learn to drive, doing 40 in 5th is how your taught now a days, it's how i was taught 4 years ago now, it's all to do with being "eco-friendly" (can't complain about it either considering my 1.4 gets 46 to the gallon doing it).

Eco friendly maybe one thing BUT shagging out your gearbox & engine in the long run is another
The standard of driving instruction these days is totally p**s poor, the standard of some driving instructors driving around in driving school liveried cars on there own is shocking enough!

Well i never said i did it constantly who doesn't enjoy a good bit of acceleration anyway.
A part of me does agree with you though, my housemate passed her test on her second try and ever since then she's been trying to give us heart attacks with her driving it's that poor (and to just prove a point she's crashed 4 times in just under 3 years...).
Either way my advice is check your coilpack and change gear later since the 1.4 in this doesn't like changing earlier than around 3k from my experience with it, it will do it but it won't like it, personally i prefer to keep the engine happier since it hasn't gone wrong yet.

When I was learning to drive I was taught to change at around 2K RPM which is a torquey diesel fiesta was fine. But as soon as I got in my 1.4 that had to go up to at least 3K before going up a gear didnt feel like youd just taken off the gas.

Im generally in 4th at 40, I was taught like that 4 years ago, the only time I'm in 5th at 40 is when I'm cruising at a steady speed and wanting to save fuel. Like I said, saying 40 in 5th was just a reference point because it should still pull a bit and it just isn't.
Il be the first to admit I don't drive economically most of the time
Ive cleaned the TB out, cleaned spark plugs, I was just wondering if people had had the same problem before I start spending money on parts, think a coil pack will be the next thing to check/replace!
