im in need of some serious advice,

i have found a car i want at half the market value, and with half the normal milage, thing is the seller told me it was in a minor front ender, bonnet, bumper, and radiator, repaired. i have seen pics of the car and it looks very good.

so i did a hpi check

and it threw this back

Date 30/07/2010
Category D - Vehicle damaged but repairable - the insurer decided not to repair

and while i know a cat did is something very minor, how bad does it have to be before it hits a cat c, as such for some reason the insurnce company declared it a total loss.

is this worth the £1995 hes asking for it, its a 54plate HDi GTi in aegian blue.

Its easy for car's to be a CAT C/D now aways, I wouldnt worry, as long as the car has been repaired to a very good standard and still runs well, whats your worry?

Go view it have a check over, and try knock him down on price due to the CAT D

thanks problem is hes 60+ miles away, so its about an hour and a half drive for me. from the pics i have seen it looks straight, the bonnet lines up with the headlights, the front wings look aligned with the doors, the bumper looks good, from the one inside engine bay shot i have the front cross member looks straight, lights are on (no gaps inbetween the clips) right. so in all it looks ok. i was thinking of collecting it this weekend on either sunday or monday, so i have to sort it out either way. was thinking of getting the aa to do a car check, to check hte chassis ect.

What He Said

If you dont know what your looking for I would invest in a check

also remember itl be harder to sell on and I think its more expensive to insure?? or is that a myth

Mine was a cat d, It had minor damage to the front wing and bonnet.
I took ramps with me so I could crawl all over and under it and check everything was straight and that the repairs had been done properly.
Cat d is usually minor cosmetic damage but because insurance repairers are meant to use brand new genuine parts now days a lot of cars get written off.
Cat C is normally heavier damage and would need a VIC certificate to confirm the car is what it is meant to be (not a clone etc..) before you could get a V5 for it.
If it were a Cat C, I would want a garage or the AA to check over the car.
As for insurance Cat D doesn't usually add any more to it.
Future selling prices of cat D would normally be 10-15% lower and Cat C 15-20%

thanks, i hae been emailing the guy about it, and he has since informed me that there is no mot on the car, and due to it needing a new battery, and a few other things, brakes need bleeding (slave cylinder was replaced), and there is multiple fault codes, i think im just gonna let it pass, as it may need further work for the mot, and it would need to be trailered home. if he was willing to mot it, and then tax it (which i would of course pay for should it pass) then i would have bought it. or if i was closer so i could actually go and see it, might be a differnt story.

anyway the search continues......

Looks nice. I'd try to get a years MOT & a warranty on it, & try to haggle a bit off the price. Still HPI it & its good to have the AA take a look.
