And the solution was...

Throw it back at a Peugeot main dealer until they fixed it under manufacturers warranty.

Could have been 1 or more of the 24 visits it had back to the dealer for various warranty work in the last year of the manufacturers warranty period that fixed it.

Lost count of the amount of engine ecu & BSI software updates it had under warranty Laughing

Not had a software update since Dec 07, might have to get an update in the new year Laughing

I think that might be normal as it depends on the rpm at any given moment.

I would check the EGR cannister valve as in the info flash as it gives instructions without replacing anything, just to make sure.

I think it would be on the rear-left hand side looking at the engine bay tucked away somewhere.

Someone else might have a better idea.

Looks like a coke can with hoses going into it.

Might be under the wheel arch too.

As your symptoms are quite severe, I would just see if it makes any difference using finger as suggested in the first instructions. Shocked

I don't know which of the two pipes but I would imagine the one that has the valve on it.

This is all just to make sure, not a definate fix obviously.

Keep at it though.

Wait, 1000 rpm is still high. Is your engine cold?
It says in the instructions "during the first minute" etc.

Have a good look at the bahaviour before you order any parts to make sure.
Normal idle should be at 750 rpm line when engine is warmed up.
