started a few days ago it sounds like the exhaust but that is solid i know i have drop links gone on the front but would that make the same sound?

sound travels down the car through heat shield/bodywork etc, could be the sound from the links resonating.
or rear suspension, or summat in your boot you forgot about (done that!)

Maybe wheel bearings. quite common on an old 206 ?

Well if there is a problem at the front which you know about you need to get it fixed. Cost less than £30 for the parts.
