as above - failed suddenly and completely on a roundabout on way home from work and scared the s**t out of me - thought I had lost all steering for a sec

and the battery warning light has come on

last week I posted about a screeching noise on turning at low speed but the nojse disappeared by itself so l didn't investigate further

must check steering fluid in a mo but sudden failure and battery warning seems odd

ideas anyone?

Yup, this is your problem.

You can continue to drive the car but your battery will no longer be charging, so probably not a good idea. Oh and you will obviously have no power steering (but you've already found that bit out).

Wants a new aux belt, and check you've not damaged anything else in the process. Have heard of aux belts coming off at speed and going through the cam-belt cover.

Might be a idea to get the timing checked if the bottom pulley looks damaged.

I did 50 miles with no aux belt

Also your AC won't work either if you have it

Wants new tensioners/rollers and a belt

yeah just checked Haynes to see exactly what the belt does - I can mess about with in-car electrics but really don,t know enough about engines - hopefully can get it into a garage next door to work in the morning
